Job Description
Description

Are you passionate about space missions?

Do you thrive in teams dedicated to technical excellence and mission success?

If so, then please consider joining the Electronic Systems Engineering team here at APL!

SEE is seeking talented and intrepid new graduates to help design and build electronic systems for space applications. We develop custom space-borne avionics for challenging missions, including electronics for command and data handling (C&DH), data storage and encryption, custom co-processors, signal processors and controllers, and spacecraft interfaces. NASA is our primary sponsor, and we also support the Department of Defence US Inteligence Community (DoD/IC) sponsors as well. We develop primarily for the space environment, where radiation effects are critical, but also design for airborne and terrestrial environments. We are active throughout the development lifecycle, from supporting mission concept development, to requirement definition, detailed design, fabrication, assembly and test. After product delivery we support spacecraft integration and test as well as mission operations.

Avionics physically touches all other subsystems of a spacecraft. Accordingly, we have a highly collaborative and collegial work environment. Staff in SEE routinely collaborate on projects across the sector and the lab. We are a go-to resource for electronic systems, including support for scientific experiments outside our group and field demos off-site.

Across the group we develop analog, digital and mixed-signal circuits, as well as programmable logic (FPGA) and embedded software. Some staff choose to focus in one domain, although many have broad interests that span the full range. New engineers will begin in support roles, including analysis and test of flight systems, as well as design and build of non-flight systems. Staff are encouraged to explore multiple avenues for career growth and find the path that best suits their passion and expertise.

As a member of the Electronic Systems Engineering team, you will...

  • Support lead engineer in the design, build and test of flight hardware.
  • Circuit modeling and simulation using tools such as SPICE and NI MultiSim, including simulation to inform worst-case analysis.
  • Design custom ground support equipment, from low-level circuits to complete automated systems.
  • Serve as test conductor, including environmental testing in thermal-vacuum chambers, EMI/EMC and vibration/shock.
  • Generate Test Plans, Test Procedures and other formal support documentation.
  • Serve as electronics consultant for experiments and field demos led by engineers and scientists around APL.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related disciplines
  • Experience designing custom electronics, including analog, digital or mixed-signal
  • Experience with programmable logic (FPGA) and/or embedded software
  • Familiar with circuit design, layout and analysis tools
  • Comfortable working in ESD-controlled labs, including probing PWAs and using test equipment.
  • Ability to follow quality assurance processes, and ability to recognize and tailor processes appropriately for the risk posture of the project
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related disciplines
  • Experience designing high-reliability electronics, including radiation, mechanical and thermal effects
  • Experience designing System-on-Chip, Network-on-Chip and other highly integrated systems
  • Experience with diverse software development flows, from scripted to compiled to embedded
