Title: Sterile Processing Technician I

Department: Central Sterile Processing

Reports to: Manager - Central Sterile Services

Position Objective:

The objective of this position is to assemble and sterilize all instruments, instrument trays, utensils, and linen packs. Perform distribution functions as it relates to case carts and sterile instrumentation.

Must be able to perform all Sterile Processing functions.The position requires rotating weekend and on-call requirements.A strict dress code and professional appearance including wearing surgical scrubs are required

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Performs decontamination functions of removal of gross debris, an inspection of lumens, processing of laparoscopic equipment/ instruments, and loading of appropriate instruments and equipment per manufacturers' recommendations and departmental and regulatory standards with efficiency
  2. Documents all work performed utilizing instrument tracking software SPM.
  3. Performs quality control checks
  4. Inspects and assembles all equipment, instruments, scopes, and instrument sets following product recipe to verify items are functional, free of debris, and required per instrument recipe.
  5. Maintains clean and organized work area, ensuring workspace is functional for peer use upon work completion or as needed.
  6. Performs (HLD) High-level disinfection with 100% accuracy.
  7. Operates sterilizers and washers efficiently, loads, and unloads sterilizer carts. Performs the quality assurance tasks necessary for the daily operation of sterilization equipment.
  8. Runs the daily OR schedules to anticipate needs and completion of case carts for supplies and instruments. Communicates any missing picklist items that are not available for 100% case cart completion to the charge person/supervisor for proper follow-up.
  9. Processes all issues and credits from requisitions/requests from other departments timely and effectively for proper inventory management of supplies. Uses established guidelines for recording and proper processing and checking of loaner equipment.
  10. Utilizes patient-specific pick lists to accurately gather surgical instruments and disposable supplies requested by the attending surgeon or another Peri-Operative representative
  11. Documents case cart build process in SPM, continuously updating the record as items are fulfilled to maintain the integrity of the needs list.
  12. Performs scheduled and cyclic physical inventory of supplies and instruments within the department.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

Required Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Completion of course in sterile processing within six months of hire

Required Minimum Experience: 6 months minimum working in a sterile processing or operating room environment.

Required License/Certifications:

Required License / Certifications: Provisional/ full CRCST Certification or the ability to achieve CRCST Certification within six months of hire

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Physical Demands -

Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to frequently lift to 35 lbs. stoop, bend, pull, and place and retrieve material.
