Medical Billing Adjunct Instructor

Reports to: Director of Career and Workforce Services Functional Area: Academic Job Location: Ward 5 Evening

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Medical Billing Adjunct Instructor will educate students according to the curriculum provided, which is designed to assist students to gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them to pass the Medical Association of Billers certification exam. The Medical Billing Adjunct Instructor will educate students in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, ICD/CPT/HCPCS coding, insurance- (claims, payments, and carriers), HIPPA, compliance- (laws, fraud, ethics) and revenue cycle management.

All instructors are responsible for creating a supportive, empowering learning environment for adult learners and delivering quality content area instruction.

Schedule as an adjunct instructor:

  • Fall 2023 beginning September January 2024
  • Classes will be held at Academy of Hope's Ward 5 site in the evening.
  • Classes will be held Monday- Thursday 5-9 pm* (In person), with 30 minute dinner break.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures regulatory compliance with state and federal instructional guidelines and commitment to the philosophy and mission of Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AOH).
  • Helps develop medical billing curriculum.
  • Teaches (lecture/presentations/quizzes/homework) medical billing students from the established curriculum.
  • Evaluates and documents students' progress through testing, observation, and assessment of skills (interpersonal, technical, clinical, and classroom)
  • Maintains confidential, accurate, and comprehensive records of students (attendance, grades, prerequisites, and skills assessments) AOH regulations
  • Ensures that students learn to treat residents, families and other members of the health care team with the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere that recognizes the individual's needs and rights.
  • Maintains efficient and effective use of all supplies and equipment
  • Engages in regular effective communication with students, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Remains current on state and federal regulations and training standards
  • Maintains a clean/safe environment conducive to learning
  • Collaborates with Program Coordinator regarding AOH medical billing training program
  • Oversees volunteer instructional staff serving as co-teachers in their classes and to those providing one-on-one or small group tutoring to their students;
  • Coordinates with Student Support Services in ensuring adult learners get both the academic and social services they need to be successful in school and in their transition to college or career. Participates in regular meetings with the Student Support Team for this purpose.
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator or Director of Career and Workforce

License/Certification:

  • CCMA and/or Medical Billing Certification

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 3 years' experience in medical billing, EMR, and insurance regulations
  • 2 years teaching or training in healthcare field required.
  • Associate degree or successful completion of 60 college credit hours preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs
  • Ability to teach and control the behavior of students
  • Knowledge of academic and/or vocational education criteria
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply current education methodologies and techniques
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Knowledge in the following content areas:
    • Medical terminology
    • Insurance/Medicare
    • ICD/CPT/HCPCS coding
    • Billing Process

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must be a self-starter and able to multitask

  • Sensitive to the needs of adult learners and respectful of learner confidentiality
  • Experience working with volunteers and consultants
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including excellent ability to communicate with a diverse population

  • This position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position is currently working a hybrid model, telework and on-site. Schedule will be determined by the Senior Leadership Team.
