The Group Technology and Operational Excellence Function (GTOE) provides leadership for technical and operational excellence across QinetiQ Group, our customers, and partners to deliver operational advantage.

Part of GTOE, the Safety Excellence Team enables the Operating Sectors for QinetiQ Group, in the area of Health & Safety through the provision of group standards, policy governance and approaches to help enable a safe working environment for the benefit of all our stakeholders.

This role will have global impact on safety processes, policy, culture, and performance and play a key part in safely enabling our people and customers.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Work as part of a team to deliver the global health and safety audit and assurance strategy, process and framework, collectively known as the SPF. The SPF should satisfy the requirements of ISO 45001, legislation and other requirements, plus deliver governance of 1st, 2nd and 3rd line assurance activities.
  2. Maintain personal SQEP (suitably qualified and experienced personnel) as part of a resource pool capable of delivering 2nd line assurance and audit and be part of a global engaged community of internal/external subject matter experts.
  3. Collaborate with global stakeholders to support and oversee the implementation of the above helping to ensure that each legal entity has appropriate content in the management system for audit and assurance.
  4. Provide subject matter expert consultative input to Sectors' and Group Functions' processes and control documents (content / deployment) as appropriate. Anticipate future global health and safety elements of people, process & capability requirements.
  5. Assist the point of contact for external safety audits and where requested regulator visits/liaison.
  6. Keep up to date with current health and safety thinking and (as appropriate) legislation globally with the intention of improving practice with adoption of technology, best practice, new ways of thinking etc. as the future of work evolves.
  7. Work as part of a team to deliver 2nd line global health and safety audit and assurance to plan or as directed in response to an emerging issue.
  8. Assist in the production of reports satisfying various business needs for the area of accountability.
  9. Maintain personal SQEP by continuous professional development and appropriate understanding of the business undertaking.
  10. Provide global audit and assurance data to enable knowledge management, continual improvement, cross-organisational learning and to inform global risk profile and required corrective/preventative actions.
  11. Oversee changes in the management system to enable controlled delivery of health and safety until changes can be embedded. Help to ensure awareness through assurance, alerts and the risk register.
  12. Ensure actions raised are SMART and closed with demonstrable evidence and escalate delinquency in circumstances where inaction may result in injury, non-compliance or reputational damage.

  3. Creative approach to problem solving, whilst being able to complete, finish and deliver to defined deadlines.
  4. Contribute to strategic direction, without losing sight of the need to be practical to help embed and operationalise any approach.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to express complex issues using clear and accurate language and where necessary with the help of other subject matter experts.
  6. Leadership skills demonstrating strong planning and management skills. Actively engage in the high performance and self-directed team. Ability to use sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
  7. Project management skills to establish priorities and deadlines, obtains necessary resources, and oversees implementation.
  8. Technical skills able to demonstrate high proficiency in the discipline.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential Experience

  1. Significant experience (5 years +) post qualification as a health and safety practitioner in a middle leadership or managerial role.
  2. Working within a highly matrixed organisation, collaborating broadly across functions, businesses, and levels, where influence is required to be successful.
  3. Practical experience (as a health & safety professional) of assurance and/or auditing processes, reporting, KPIs and performance insights and how they fit into the overall governance frameworks.
  4. Contribution to group-wide health and safety policies, standards, processes, and tools.
  5. Experience of working across multiple streams of activities with conflicting priorities.
  6. Experience of working with Knowledge of OSHA and region-specific regulations and relevant machine related NFPA, ANSI, ISO, UL, IEC etc.

Desirable Experience

  1. Working in a health and safety function in an international or global capacity.
  2. Project/program management experience desirable.

Essential Qualifications

  1. Recognised health & safety qualification e.g Certified Safety Professional (CSP).

Desirable Qualifications

Chartered member of IOSH, or equivalent professional body, or working towards this.
