Job Description

Fibertek seeks a Chief Engineer to provide technical leadership for a rapidly expanding portfolio of laser communications systems and technologies that address significant needs in civil, defense, and commercial requirements for widespread high-rate optical communications across multiple orbital domains and uplink/downlink to ground networks. We have ongoing currently-funded projects as well as a large opportunity space for future growth with new and existing customers that will enable you to shape the future of Fibertek's role in the development of space-based optical networks. This position is a unique opportunity to join an organization known worldwide for successfully developing laser-based systems and technologies for the space community and to lead technology developments in a high-growth technology sector.


The Chief Engineer for Laser Communications will have high-impact responsibilities that include:

  • Technical leadership of programs resulting in the successful delivery of space-flight components and systems that demonstrate new operational capabilities critical to national interests in defense and space exploration
  • Leadership and mentoring of a diverse and extremely talented team of engineers and scientists with expertise across related disciplines including fiber optics, electro-optical systems, pointing controls, signal processing, structures and mechanisms, and other areas
  • Representation as Fibertek's foremost authority in laser communications systems to key customer communities and industry partners - resulting in offered solutions that are innovative, technically credible, and responsive to current and emerging capability needs
  • Oversight of the development and adoption of engineering tools and best-practices that enhance the efficiency and operational success of engineering development programs and incorporate design features that enable predictable manufacturing following initial development and demonstration
Job Requirements

Experience and expertise required:

  • Master's or PhD degree in a relevant engineering or applied-science field
  • >10 years professional experience including demonstrated success leading large and diverse technical teams in an engineering organization
  • Familiarity with key achievements, demonstrations and/or strategies for organizations driving significant activity in space-based laser communications development including NASA, SDA, DARPA and other Government offices
  • Demonstrable expertise in free-space laser communications system concepts and technologies
  • Additional expertise in engineering systems and components for aerospace and defense missions
  • US Citizen and eligibility to obtain a US Security Clearance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Skills and experience listed below are considered significant differentiators for candidates that meet the Requirements listed above:

  • Familiarity with industry-standard engineering tools in one or more disciplines: requirements tracking and verification, model-based systems engineering, circuit design and simulation, thermal and structural analysis, optical design and tolerance analysis, and/or others
  • Established relationships in organizations developing space-flight missions and systems, including NASA, US Government defense organizations, and/or aerospace Prime Contractor mission partners
