The Speech Pathologist II job is an experienced therapist who is able to independently adapt intervention to meet specific patient's needs. The Speech Pathologist is able to provide coverage in their primary setting, but also as needed throughout the hospital/rehab/outpatient settings with minimal-moderate amount of support and training from mentors, peers or the manager. The Speech Pathologist also assumes basic leadership roles within the department, demonstrates flexibility, exercises good judgment, problem solving and works collaboratively with colleagues.

The Speech Pathologist II job participates in department projects or events in an efficient and productive manner. This role not only attends educational activities, but also provides in-service education to other staff. At Level II, the Speech Pathologist begins developing the skills to provide student supervision with mentorship of an experienced student supervisor. The Speech Pathologist II job can also participate in research activities at the department level, being mentored as needed by a more experienced Speech Pathologist.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP Current CCC in SLP CPR certification Experience REQUIRED: Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments Previous experience planning and executing treatment Experience PREFERRED: Minimum of two (2) years of previous clinical experience Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders Minimal novice experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g. critical care, long term care, outpatient, etc.) Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems Education/training REQUIRED: Masters Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology Completes required learning exchange courses Education/training PREFERRED: N/A Independent action(s) required: Performs the following for patients with moderately to significantly complex communication and/or swallowing disorders: schedule frequency and intensity of therapy; select assessment instruments and administer assessment; interpret results; complete documentation; plan and carry out treatment strategies; develop long- and short-term goals; perform patient/family/staff education; report at patient/family/team conferences; and terminate therapy when appropriate. Manages or mentors and provides advice/guidance/training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation and patient care for patient issues or when requested by staff. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): SLPs with their CCC's may provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Student Program Coordinator. Additional position requirements: Able to provide services to multiple settings after being oriented and deemed competent for that patient population; this includes covering outpatient, rehab and inpatient areas in addition to SLP's primary area of practice (i.e. inpatient vs. rehab).
