The scope of Hubbard's work includes complex highway projects, site development, paving, utility and drainage systems, surveying, RAP and hot mix sales, and state-of-the-art bridge building. We provide multiple delivery systems in design-build, bid-build, public/private-partnerships and design-build finance.

General Description

This is an entry level position in heavy highway and site development construction. Construction Engineers will be trained in each business department and will be required to demonstrate potential and satisfactory progress towards a supervisor position.

The program consists of a 15-month challenging rotation in different departments and entities of Hubbard Construction. Rotational assignments are in different functional areas including, but not limited to, Field Operations, Estimating, Equipment, Survey, Asphalt Operations, Quality Control, Contracts and Scheduling. Participants will also receive leading-edge training as well as the opportunity to interface with current Hubbard Construction leaders.

Key Duties

10-months spent in the field addressing the learning objectives outlined below as they pertain to the following topical areas:

Survey

Site:
Fundamental surveying procedures
Basic civil site plan reading
Replacing missing stakes
Cross section collection with T./Station
Bridge:
Reading bridge plans
Horizontal and vertical bridge control
Pile stakeout
Grading beams and applying dead load deflections

Earthwork:

Pond excavation
Roadway excavation
Fill operations
Muck excavation and backfill

Roadway Construction:

Sub-grade
Stabilization
Curb and Gutter - curb pad, curb and gutter
Base - lime rock, soil cement, asphalt
Asphalt (OPC)
Roadway finishes - sidewalks, sod, guardrail, railing, fence, barrier wall, striping, and signage

Structures:
Pile Driving
Sheet Pile
Concrete Foundations
Concrete Foundation Walls - Retaining walls
Columns
Pier Caps/abutments
Beam Installation
Diaphragms
Rebar installation
Superstructure construction - including decking (2 weeks)
Parapet Walls

Utilities:
Sewer - Pressure and Gravity
Water
Drainage
Duct Bank/Conduit

The Construction Engineer will also:

  • Produce labor and equipment cost reports to monitor production costs, drive billing, budgets and costs to complete.
  • Produce daily, weekly and monthly quantities to monitor production, drive management reports and reconcile owner quantities.
  • Assists Field Engineer and Project Engineer in updating project schedule.
  • Initiates purchase orders, shop drawings, submittals and material deliveries.


Qualification Requirements

  • General. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily.   • Education and Experience. This position typically is an entry-level job. A Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Management is required. Proficient PC skills including a proficiency in various software used such as Excel, Primavera, and SAP. Familiarity or an internship with construction industry practices preferred. Must be able to understand and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
  • Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Construction Engineer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
    • Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
    • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
    • Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise.
    • Work can be performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
    • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).
  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Construction Engineer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
    • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
    • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
