Supports the work of the Teaching and Learning office, with a focus on development of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) that will meet the needs of diverse learners, including gifted and advanced students, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners. The Educational Specialist will assist with the development of curriculum and professional development aligned to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards (MDCCRS) and the City Schools Instructional Models. Serves as a district expert in the area of interventions, MTSS and specialized instruction.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and delivers ongoing professional development around best practices in differentiated instruction, including use of UDL and MTSS.
  • Participates in the evaluation and selection of instructional materials.
  • Provides guidance to school teams and network teams to ensure schools have the systems, interventions, and tools to meet the needs of all students.
  • Develops curriculum, intervention models and assessments.
  • Uses data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and schools in the district.
  • Serves as a member of the district MTSS team that spans multiple content offices within the Office of Teaching and Learning.
  • Works collaboratively with multiple offices to advance teaching and learning in the district by supporting the MTSS.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.
Maximum Salary 107495.00
Minimum Salary 82017.00
Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Education or related field, or Model Teacher pathway. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Advanced Professional Certificate required.
  • Certification in Special Education preferred.
  • Three years teaching experience; special education or specialized instruction experience preferred; urban experience preferred.
  • Ability to design and deliver professional development.
  • Experience coaching teachers and/or school teams to improve practice.
  • Knowledge of current research, best practices, and adult learning.
  • Detailed knowledge of the MDCCRS, MTSS and UDL.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations.
  • Interpersonal skills that ensure effective teambuilding and understanding for the team process.
  • Skilled in interpreting, understanding, and applying data.
  • Proficient in the use of multiple computer applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, PD Tracking and reporting software, databases, and Online Professional Learning software.
