Job Description

This position is assigned work at the journeyman level to install, repair and maintain a variety of pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures (water/sewer/steam/gas), including pipefitting and steam fitting districtwide. Maintenance Plumber/Pipefitter is distinguished from other maintenance positions in that specialized knowledge is required to perform the work assigned to maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all plumbing systems in district facilities.

Essential Functions
  • Assembles, installs, maintains, and pressure test all pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Ability to lead and instruct lesser skilled plumbing staff in technical and functional areas of plumbing
  • Determines sources of plumbing malfunctions and complete repairs as indicated or according to work orders.
  • Installs and repairs pipes, fittings, valves, fixtures, and plumbing system equipment, including sinks, commodes, water heaters, water softeners, etc.
  • Receives and completes assigned work orders for corrective and preventive maintenance.
  • Selects material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  • Maintains accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Maintains inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspects jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Works with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Detects needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures.
  • Responds to emergency calls as needed.
  • Prepares work orders, time-keeping records, and reviews inventory documentation using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (SchoolDude)
  • May assist workers on various projects.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on various plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Ensures proper maintenance and use of hand and power tools, such as pipe threaders and cutters, electric sewer routers, ejector pump machines, augers, water jet sewer machines, gas leak detectors, acetylene welding torches, backflow testers, multi-meters, temperature sensors and various drills and dies and other plumbing and pipefitting equipment
  • Ensures that there is an appropriate inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Mechanically unclogs stopped-up sewer lines, toilets, urinals, water coolers, sink drains, and interceptors.
  • Tests pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges.
  • Drives automobiles and trucks to transport workers, supplies, and materials to job sites.
  • Works in other areas of maintenance and overtime may be required.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board polices and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education.
  • Five years of experience as a licensed plumber/pipefitter. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of plumbing and pipefitting. Knowledge of plumbing codes. Knowledge of plumbing and pipefitting tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Skilled in plumbing and pipefitting. Skilled in troubleshooting plumbing system malfunctions.
  • Possession of a Baltimore City journey plumber/pipefitter license or an equivalent license that is eligible for reciprocity and can be obtained within 30 days of employment offer required.
  • The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, balancing on scaffolding and lifts, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Frequently requires accessing limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, and under relocatable/trailer and work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent with a safe driving record is required.
