Overview

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a dynamic and committed Director to lead the Office of Large Grant Development, a newly created central research development office established to fulfil the goals of the 2022-2027 St. Jude Strategic Plan.The Office will support investigators and research teams across the institution with complex, multi-investigator research grant proposals.

The Director for the Office of Large Grant Development (OLGD) will need substantial experience managing the development and submission process for multimillion-dollar grant applications. The Director will have the opportunity to build a team of 4-5 collaborative, talented, and dedicated staff from the ground up. This is an exciting time for large-scale research development at St. Jude, with a unique opportunity to help shape the direction of this office. The Director will work with St. Jude investigators and a variety of institutional support offices to raise the quality and quantity of submitted and successful complex, multi-PI, large funding applications for research grant opportunities from federal and non-federal sources. The Director will have expertise in conduct or supervision of scientific writing, coordination of investigator teams in the grant preparation process, overseeing the development of large complex grants, and grant harmonization.
In order to be successful in this position, you will need to be able to work effectively with researchers/faculty, administrative staff, and interact productively with funding agencies. Serve as a mentor and resource to develop, guide, and further the work of supervisees to achieve goals that contribute to the growth of the office in supporting large grant proposal submissions.

Responsibilities

The Director - Large Grant Development Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an expert in all phases of proposal development for complex, multi-PI, collaborative grants in response to selected opportunities
  • Facilitate the strategic planning and submission of select large grant opportunities, in partnership with faculty and other collaborators across the institution
  • Collaborate with the faculty and provide intellectual input into the overall vision, research strategies, and project goals for compelling research proposals
  • Direct OLGD team in the planning and execution of proposal development and submission
  • Identify barriers to successful project outcomes and develop collaborative plans to mitigate risks and implement solutions
  • Oversee development and maintenance of resources to support researchers in their proposal development
  • Serve as a key resource for all matters pertaining to large grant development including remaining current with sponsor policies and procedures, and changes in federal, state, and institution policies
  • Work with internal and external institutional partners to ensure seamless proposal development and submittal process
  • Identify funding opportunities that align with St. Jude investigators' research programs and connect researchers with these opportunities

  • Facilitate relationships across the organization to form teams that pursue new interdisciplinary funding opportunities

  • Evaluate OLGD services and implement enhancements for improved customer service.

  • Collaborate with leadership, researchers, and other stakeholders in development of strategy, goals, and outcome measures for the OLGD

  • Support training of PIs in the development of complex, collaborative funding applications. Lead and/or partner with institutional experts in current grantsmanship training programs. Research, develop and execute new training activities and/or informational sessions

  • Plan and supervise personnel within the OLGD. Determine the roles and lead the hiring process of OLGD staff. Routinely evaluate responsibilities and work assignments to maximize individual abilities, skill sets, and overall productivity.

  • Participate in professional development activities. Attend relevant national, regional, and local research administration meetings

  • Perform other related duties as directed


Minimum Education

  • Master's degree required
  • Degree in a scientific/healthcare field, Health Administration, or Business Administration strongly preferred
  • PhD or equivalent preferred

Minimum Experience

  • Eight (8) years of experience in proposal development and grants & contracts administration in an academic research, or similar, setting required
  • Supervisory/management experience required
  • Significant experience with all aspects of extramural grants and/or contracts including federal compliance regulations
  • Proven experience in working effectively with researchers/faculty, administrative staff, and interacting productively with funding agencies
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams
  • Clinical, basic or translational science, or population science/public health backgrounds preferred; research experience is a plus
