Position Summary

Oceaneering provides a range of survey projects within the fields of seafloor mapping, geophysical, geotechnical surveys, and hydrographic surveys; these services ar provided to the O&G, government, and renewable energy sectors. The project geoscientist will provide in-field/offshore geophysical data acquisition expertise and provide assistance in the functional setup of equipment / software to ensure quality data collection to meet or exceed Customer's expectations.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL

  • The project geoscientist is responsible for assisting in the functional setup of hydrographic sensors that provide high-resolution, remote-sensing survey data. Remote-sensing geophysical instruments commonly used on these projects include multi-beam and single-beam bathymetry systems, side scan sonars (deep-towed and conventional), magnetometers, pingers, boomers, seismic systems and autonomous underwater vehicles.
  • The geophysicist will assist with project sensor selection and vessel layout thereof
  • The geophysicist must have a thorough understanding of the capability and limitations of marine geophysical data types to ensure data quality objectives are met.
  • The geophysicist is trained in the use of specialized software for interpreting the data from the geophysical systems.
  • The geophysicist and draftsperson will produce maps that will convey the seafloor conditions as well as the locations of the geohazards.
  • Review, recommend and advise commercial dept. on the technical specifications of the Request for Quote (RFQ) and assist with drafting survey line plan to meet Customer's objectives
  • Review new technologies related to geophysical survey whether instruments or software to optimize survey projects
  • Compile and provide technical presentations to Customer base

NON-ESSENTIAL

  • Communicate with the Party Chief, systems engineers and data processing personnel with respect to data interpretation and quality.
  • Suggest improvements to survey techniques and practices and implement these on approval of the Operations Manager.
  • The geophysicist is required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • BS degree or higher in geophysics, marine geology, engineering or related field.
  • Ability to obtain / maintain a US government security clearance at required level
  • Five ( 5) years minimum experience and knowledge in setup of of remote sensing instruments in the collection of geophysical data on marine vessels.
  • Five (5) years minimum experience in processing and interpretation of MBES, SSS, SBP, MAG and seismic data
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Travel international and domestic when required
  • Must obtain / maintain a valid passport and be able to obtain visas for international travel

DESIRED

  • Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS, Global Mapper, or equivalent mapping programs is preferred.
  • Proficiency with a variety of field concepts, practices, procedures and equipment operations such as GPS, Side Scan Sonars, Multibeam, Subbottom profiler, and Magnetometer systems.
  • Familiarity/experience with survey processing software such as CARIS, Sonarwiz, Edgetech Discover, Fledermaus, Hypack, Qimera etc.
