Job Description

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this job. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform work-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description. This job description is not a "contract" between the employee and the Authority. The job duties and essential functions may be changed at the discretion of the CEO/General Manager.

SUMMARY:

The Paralegal provides project-related assistance to Attorneys. Duties include preparation of correspondence, legal documents and pleadings, legal research, interviewing witnesses, coordinating and performing document preparation, and assisting in the work of the Office of the General Counsel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares correspondence, legal documents, and pleadings.
  • Coordinates activities of counsel, including calendar keeping and meeting scheduling.
  • Coordinates the work activities with other office personnel; provides assistance and support to office personnel when needed.
  • Prepares and assembles materials to assist counsel.
  • Meets with Authority personnel to gather information, etc.
  • Acts as liaison between counsel, authority staff, outside counsel, and the public.
  • Proofreads documents and correspondence for accuracy.
  • Conducts legal research. Performs electronic research using Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis, case law and other databases, websites, and the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations. Monitors the DC Register for new and amended regulations, and prepares brief summaries of the changes to the law to be distributed to the departments.
  • Monitors expenses; and assists in the procurement of supplies and services necessary for office efficiency.
  • Prepares regular and special reports.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the Associate General Counsel.

Key Working Relationships: Interacts with co-workers in the Office and throughout the Authority, outside counsel, and the general public.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE & OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

The minimum qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability necessary for an individual to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable amounts of training are provided.

  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited program, college, or university and two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, PowerPoint (or equivalent), and spreadsheet programs.
  • Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
