Job Description

SMECO is looking for qualified technical resources to focus on the investment, maintenance, and operations of the SMECO Electric System. We are looking for motivated electrical engineers ready to seize the opportunity to ensure SMECO is a technically strong Cooperative.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO), headquartered in Hughesville, Maryland, is a rapidly growing transmission and distribution cooperative with about 500 employees that serves over 162,000 consumers just south of Washington, D.C. SMECO has a peak load of almost 1000 MW, assets in excess of $980 million, with over 400 miles of transmission lines serving 71 substations.

Primary Functions:

  • Directs the Cooperative's electric system performance relating to: adequate facility capacity margins, normal and contingency system response, operability, safety, reliability, engineering and construction standards, protection and sectionalizing practices, and power quality.
  • Directs the scope, engineering analysis, methodology, construction coordination, documentation, timeframe, and associated activities for completing Cooperative electric system studies, associated software model development, and electric system interconnections.
  • Directs system planning and engineering activities to ensure corporate compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), PJM, and Maryland State Public Service Commission (PSC) reliability regulations, Pepco-SMECO Transmission Owner Interconnection Agreement statutes, and the Cooperative internal compliance program (ICP).
  • Ensures the cooperative's electric system is configured, engineered, constructed, and operated in a manner that ensures normal and contingency facility capacity margins, operational flexibility, system reliability, and safety meets customer-member, PSC, and NERC reliability expectations.
  • Performs conceptual engineering, issues circuit protective sectionalizing directives, prepares project scope documentation, and serves as a subject matter expert (SME) liaison for engineering, right-of-way, and construction project coordination activities that enhance the Cooperative electric system.
  • Develops and directs Cooperative Electric System Studies and report documents such as but not limited to: construction work plans (CWP), Plant Improvement Plans (PIP), system losses, power flow, short circuit protective coordination, sectionalizing, outage contingency, and motor start / flicker studies.

Starting salary ranges between $112,000-$151,100. SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.

Required Skills

Education - Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university in an engineering discipline is required, with some business administration, computer, management services, power systems engineering, and technical writing courses preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland is essential. Candidates with registrations from states maintaining reciprocity with Maryland must obtain Maryland Registration within one year of employment.

Required Experience

Must have eight or more years of increasingly responsible experience in the engineering, construction, or operations department of an electric utility or engineering consulting firm, with supervision preferred. Familiarity with electric utility transmission, station, and distribution facility design, planning, construction, operations, maintenance, specifications, power systems software, and administrative principles and practices is required.
