Summary of Job Duties

The Marketing and Communications Director (Marketing Director) serves as a recognized organization-wide expert. with significant impact and influence on organizational policy and program development. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the organization. Due to UCEAP's self-funded status, the impact of these projects and initiatives on enrollment and advocacy for UCEAP carry substantial consequences. Directs organization-wide initiatives that include formulating strategies and policies, and administering processes and resources.

Develops and implements comprehensive, strategic marketing plans and oversees the marketing, communications and outreach efforts of UCEAP. Provides student outreach communications including the conceptualization, development, implementation and review of multi-dimensional marketing programs; involves analysis of identified constituencies/student audiences and the development of programs, services, and outreach to meet identified needs and influence public perception; includes all media including web marketing and social media; involves "brand" development and/or enhancement.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice Provost & Executive Director (Executive Director), creates comprehensive, integrated, cost-effective and strategic marketing plans that support UCEAP's vision, mission and student recruitment and participation goals. Identifies, conceptualizes and implements new marketing plans and related goals and objectives. Evaluates marketing efforts for efficiency and efficacy. In collaboration and consultation with senior staff and stakeholders formulates strategy to increase UCEAP's visibility and to meet UCEAP's short term and long term enrollment goals and objectives

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business or related field required.

Minimum 7 years experience in marketing, or related area, including team management and supervisory experience.

Knowledge of principles and methods of developing a comprehensive, strategic marketing program. Demonstrated capacity to envision, design, and implement a successful and comprehensive marketing and communications strategy in an organization with complexity characteristic of a university or similar organization.

Ability to think strategically and execute strategic marketing programs through effective management of multidimensional communication channels including digital and social media.

Demonstrated collaboration, data-driven decision making, and strategic skills characteristic of a leadership-level marketing position.

Exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication abilities and strong presentation skills.

Working knowledge of advertising, creative design, copy writing and editing, web design, social media, and branding development.

Knowledge of current marketing and communications trends and emerging technologies in marketing applications, including ability to understand and apply market research, strategies and tactics, and demonstrated experience in utilizing marketing analytics to guide decision-making.

Previous success in producing and driving successful content strategy that effectively attracts significant, desired audience through traditional and non-traditional channels, including digital platforms.

Experience successfully developing and managing budgets for multiple projects. Proven experience with internal and external (vendor) resource management.

Solid organizational skills to lead a team working on multiple, simultaneous projects of varying complexity levels with competing and sometimes changing deadlines; ability to establish goals and work load priorities, and complete projects within budget and time constraints.

Proven ability to lead a cohesive marketing and communications team. Ability to effectively delegate and provide direction under stringent deadlines, and to coach and evaluate professionals.

Demonstrated team-orientation and client-focus with ability to work collaboratively; self-starter with ability to work as part of a larger team, and to balance interests and needs of a variety of stakeholders in a complex, consensus-based setting.

Ability to facilitate consultation with and advisement to leaders and stakeholders such as Regional and IT Directors, , web group, campus administrators and staff across all UC campuses, regarding coordination of marketing strategies, activities and deliverables. Ability to interact with, and provide smooth interface among, constituencies with diverse priorities.

Proven ability to propose and implement strategic and innovative solutions to problems with a positive, collaborative approach. Demonstrated history of establishing credibility, earning trust, and gaining the confidence of diverse constituents by seeking and incorporating feedback into decisions, while integrating the needs of stakeholders into a cohesive strategy.

Desirable Qualifications

A Master's degree in marketing, communications, business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience is preferred.

Thorough familiarity with marketing analytics and data management tools.

Develop/Lead Marketing & Communications Strategies

As a unit director, operates at UCEAP's highest administrative level to develop and manage strategic communications programs having organization-wide impact. Leads complex communications issues with little or no precedent, where analysis of situations requires an in-depth knowledge of multiple communications media, including written, visual, and electronic, and associated technical applications. Applies deep knowledge of UC's and UCEAP's vision and missions, goals, policies, and infrastructure, including the complexities of a system-wide academic program and strong knowledge of current affairs and marketing trends, in engaging in strategic planning, project management and implementation.

Provides expertise to senior leadership to build an organizational brand and create tools for positioning the organization strategically with the organization's clients, partners and other stakeholders. Serves as a resource and subject matter expert to organization in matters involving all communications needs. Serves as internal expert on study abroad trends and performs ongoing analyses of competitive programs. Engages in organization-wide strategic planning; conceptualizes, develops, recommends and implements new marketing plans. Directs the planning, preparation and production of a variety of marketing materials in print as well as in electronic and digital formats. Leads strategic marketing and recruitment initiatives and content development strategy for all media. Directs content creation for all marketing materials and determines effective advertising and recruitment strategies. Oversees the management and development of social media strategy for news, information and public relations. Leads highly complex organization-wide communications programs to serve the needs of the all stakeholders and constituents, including a diverse student audience, in a competitive, dynamic study abroad landscape to reach UCEAP's annual enrollment requirements for sustainability.

Consults with senior leadership to create, develop, recommend and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans, effective messaging, and problem resolution. Develops and implements strategy for building audience base for content delivered via social and all other media. Utilizes tools/metrics to gauge effectiveness of efforts, reports to senior leadership, and adjusts strategy accordingly.





Leadership & Mgmt of Marketing Unit

Applies comprehensive understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media, and applications. Applies understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications to managing and leading the operations of the Marketing & Communications unit. Conducts regular staff meetings with full-time staff and student employees. By delegation and direct involvement, guides and oversees work of Marketing staff in executing the outlined marketing objectives. Establishes and implements operational guidelines and trains, leads, mentors and monitors staff to ensure completion of projects within established deadlines and performance standards. Oversees work processes and output, and ensures standards are met, that continual improvement is achieved, and that the department is consistently providing constituents with the highest levels of service. In consultation with UCEAP leadership, prepares and monitors marketing budget. Responsible for managing relationships with and work completed by external firms (e.g., design and communications consultants, vendors, etc.).

Regularly completes UC training in management and supervision, as recommended or assigned.





Leadership: Communication, Collaboration&Consult.

Serves as a resource to organization in matters involving all communications needs. Leads discussions of identified marketing needs from multiple stakeholders; provides comprehensive resolution to problems, complaints, issues or concerns from all constituencies. Works in collaboration with leaders and stakeholders such as Regional Directors, Research Director, Alumni/Development Director, IT Director, web group, Finance Director, campus administrators and staff across all UC campuses, and other workgroups, to identify and meet immediate and long-term marketing needs, and to ensure consistency of program messages and coordination of marketing materials and communications. Cultivates relationships with campus study abroad office administrators and staff on all UC campuses; coordinates and assists in the development and implementation of marketing and student recruitment efforts. Works in collaboration with UCOP, campus study abroad administrations and offices and study centers abroad to develop strategies and tools for effective recruitment and retention of UC undergraduates to study on UCEAP programs.

Coordinates cooperative efforts with campus study abroad offices, departments and student groups to promote UCEAP. Consults with and supports initiatives as outlined by the Associate Vice Provost & Executive Director, providing information, offering recommendations and completing projects as requested.

Consults with and advises senior staff on significant communications, in developing effective communication strategies and appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex matters. Advises and assists Associate Vice Provost & Executive Director and senior staff, as requested, in preparing communications related to UC stakeholders and constituents such as UCOP, UCEAP Governing Committee, Campus Administrative Directors, Campus Faculty Directors, multiple system-wide committees (registrars, diversity officers, student health center, financial aid, etc.), as well as entities outside UC such as international university partners, US peer institutions, professional organizations in international education (IIE, NAFSA, FORUM, EAIE, AIEA, APLU), government agencies (State Department, Department of Commerce, Legislative Analyst's Office), and the media.

Works with other UCEAP directors, unit heads and professionals to:
-develop appropriate policies and procedures for assigned duties and responsibilities;
-prepare fiscal reports and provide analyses and recommendations to UCEAP leadership; and,
-contribute ideas in developing long and short term strategic planning.
