EchoStar has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Communications Systems Engineer in our Hughes Network Systems division to help us develop the next generation of satellite communications systems. The position is located in our Maryland office. The successful candidate will enjoy a rich and fulfilling career with a variety of responsibilities ranging across the entire life cycle, including: initial conceptual system design; analysis, simulation, and specification; implementation; integration and test; performance monitoring; and end-of-life transition to the next system. We are looking for someone with broad experience to work on our next generation LEO/MEO/GEO satellite communication systems, and a willingness to do even more.

Responsibilities:

  • Review internal or external requirements for satellite systems; refine or generate appropriate system-level requirements
  • Analyze, model, and simulate candidate designs.
  • Develop system level algorithms such as for power control, timing and frequency synchronization.
  • Write and review specifications, design documents, reports and presentations
  • Analyze system requirements and develop system architectures for RF and baseband subsystems.
  • Develop subsystem requirements, specifications and technical evaluations
  • Conduct link budgets analyses, block and signal level analyses, and, trade off studies
  • Analyze RF performance and conduct simulations and measurements to determine signal integrity, cross-talk, coupling, noise, insertion loss, return loss.
  • Develop algorithms for calibration of antenna subsystems in fixed and mobile user terminal installations
  • Develop constellation modeling and analyses for LEO/MEO/GEO satellite systems and conduct analyses against regulatory masks.
  • Document detailed designs and present them internally and to external customers

Requirements:

  • BSEE in electrical engineering with emphasis on signal analyses and RF/microwave engineering
  • 3+ years expertise in communications systems theory and analysis including link budgets, signal propagation, phase noise, EVM, non-linear effects, etc.
  • 3+ years of experience with microwave circuit design in industry.
  • Previous experience using analytical skills and modeling skills for RF performance in LEO/MEO/GEO systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSEE in electrical engineering with emphasis on signal analyses and RF/microwave engineering
  • Ph.D in electrical engineering with emphasis on signal analyses and RF/microwave engineering
  • Knowledge of satellite system architectures (GEO, LEO, MEO and others)
  • Ability to develop a variety of simulation models of satellite communications systems, including determining system capacity, error rate performance, queuing, traffic management, etc.
  • Ability to create and use detailed link budgets
  • Excellent communications skills: ability to write technical specifications and reports clearly and concisely; ability to present ideas and results effectively
  • Skill in using a variety of simulation and modeling tools and programming languages
  • Familiarity with ITU-R and FCC regulations as they apply to satellites and ground equipment
  • Familiarity with DVB-S2X and other wireless standards in the terrestrial and satellite realm
  • Awareness of GRASP and antenna performance parameters
