Communication Technician Apprentices are employees and have basic employee responsibilities. This level Apprentice will be given instruction and work experience installing basic communication equipment which involves using hand tools and power tools, a basic understanding of electrical blueprints, and knowledge of the NEC. Additionally, each Apprentice must make every effort to become a well-qualified technician. This requires registering for related instruction courses, attending regularly and being in time.

  1. Responsible for but not limited to:  
  2. Assisting in pulling various types of wiring.
  3. Assisting in Site Grounding
  4. Assisting in Pulling Low Voltage Cable
  5. Assisting in Prefab Assembly installation.
  6. Assisting in Core Drilling
  7. Assisting in the installation of Cable Tray. 
  8. Installing Devices
  9. Maintaining clean work area.
  10. Securing company tools daily
  11. Assist with monthly tool checks
  12. Participating in Job site clean up
  13. Handling material.
  14. Preparing the work area.  
  15. Demonstrating effective use of hand tools such as drill motors, sawzalls, hydraulic knockouts punches, etc.
  16. Wearing all Personal Safety Equipment
  17. Following safety policies and rules
  18. Reading, understanding and demonstrating use of Activity  Hazard Analysis
  19. Demonstrating proper use and care of tools
  20. Displaying understanding of and following material safeguarding and storage practices
  21. Displaying understanding of and following equipment safety, safeguarding and storage.
  22. Assisting in all size of telecom wire pulling.
  23. Participating actively in Daily work briefings.

Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or GED are required with 0-1 years of experience.
  2. Must be 18 years of age
  3. Must have reliable transportation to and from the jobsite and school.
  4. Be willing to attend school in the evenings one or two nights a week for three (3) years.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Lifting at least 50 pounds at one time.
  2. Relocating a twelve-foot stepladder without assistance as required.
  3. May use standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  4. Working at various heights up to 60 feet, climbing and maintaining balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  5. Walking, climbing, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls, and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.

DESIRE

 

  1. Apprentice should have some experience installing structured Cable plant experience in a team environment or other experience installing and terminating low voltage cabling.  Apprentices must be able to follow directions to install a quality product under the guidance of Technicians, Foreman or other leadership.  Apprentices must have Basic hand tool set to include Snips and Punch down Tool.
  2. Apprentices with experience assisting with Fiber Optics is a plus.
  3. Vocational Training is a plus.
