The postdoctoral position for a highly motivated researcher is available in Dr. Nitin Agrawal's laboratory within the Center for Cancer and Immunology Research (CCIR) at Children's National Research Institute in Washington DC. The laboratory focuses on developing novel technologies utilizing microfluidics and nanoparticle based approaches for translational research in cancer immunotherapy. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be actively involved in advancing the ongoing projects as well as developing new hypothesis based projects and will have the opportunity to work with researchers and clinicians at the Hospital. In addition to undertaking research projects, responsibilities will include extensive grant writing and mentoring students and/or lab technicians and managing routine laboratory tasks. Candidate should be an independent thinker with the ability to troubleshoot challenging problems with innovative ideas.
Applicants should have background in Biological/Biomedical/Bioengineering/Chemical Engineering, Biomaterials, Biology, Biochemistry or related disciplines. Prior experience in immunology research utilizing T-cell and/or Dendritic cell based assays is required. In addition, applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas will be given preference: (1) Liposome synthesis, encapsulation, and delivery, (2) cell culture and analytical techniques in molecular biology (Western Blot, ELISA, immunohistochemistry etc.), (3) fluorescent microscopy, data acquisition, image analysis and/or design & modeling of microscale geometries (e.g., COMSOL, AutoCAD, etc.), (4) microfabrication of lab-on-a-chip devices, and (5) a strong interest and potential to conduct interdisciplinary research. Applicants with prior expertise in liposomes and experimental cancer research will be given highest preference, although individuals lacking experience such specific expertise but possessing a strong biological background and evidence of success may also be considered.
The Research Postdoctoral Fellow is a "research trainee" for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies. Assists faculty in the conduct of research and reports to a principal investigator or CRI Center Director. Can serve in several roles in the laboratory setting depending on the scientific specialty and needs of the research project supported. Participates directly in the design and conduct of experiments and therefore needs technical knowledge and subject matter expertise encompassing several disciplines such as molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology or animal science. Based on experience the research post-doctoral fellow may train technical staff, graduate students and others in laboratory procedures may provide general supervision in the laboratory and assists with data management and analysis. In addition, the research post-doc fellow will be responsible for assisting the principal investigator in the planning and execution research projects, grant applications and publications. May further assist in the management of resource allocations, and may manage day-to-day activities in the laboratory, such as purchasing, oversight of laboratory animals, radioactivity, and biosafety issues. May guide or lead the work of peers, technicians or other diverse support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments or complete large and complex projects.
