Job Description
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, a powerful voice for working men and women, is seeking a Political Director to develop and implement a nationwide political strategy to help elect candidates at the state and federal levels who support UFCW’s mission to elevate the social and economic status of workers by improving the wages, benefits, working conditions and security of our members. Also, supervises and evaluates professional and support staff as assigned.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements the UFCW's nationwide political strategy to elect candidates that support UFCW’s program objectives and goals.
  • Designs and implements small and large scale fundraising programs in coordination with local unions to raise Active Ballot Club funds.
  • Assists Director with disbursement of political funds to candidates and campaigns, and responding to fundraising requests and monitors the political expenditures and contributions.
  • Coordinates with other UFCW departments to develop a message strategy and support materials.
  • Develops and coordinates field campaigns including but not limited to GOTV programs.
  • Prepares and presents reports to UFCW International and local union officers, staff and members.
  • Manages on-site campaign events and facilitates press conferences.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of campaign finance regulations as they apply to UFCW fund-raising and PACs.
  • Build relationships by participating in allied union and progressive organizations’ political activities and   coordinating the International, regional, and local union participation in political activities.
  • Works with the Political Coordinator to develop political reports upon request.
  • Attends and represents the UFCW at political conferences and meetings, as well as at conferences, seminars, and training programs for union officers, staff, or members.
  • Extensive travel and long/irregular hours required, including nights and weekends.
 Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science or related field (or equivalent related experience) and 10 years of relevant work experience, with a minimum five years in the legislative area and minimum five years in the political arena.  Experience in at least two Presidential cycles is preferred.  Experience in the labor movement is required.  Demonstrated ability to effectively delegate work and supervise others required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Must be able to make oral presentations to groups or individuals, including union officials, staff, and members, of congress or other related individuals on a variety of legislative related issues.  Must be able to read, analyze and interpret FEC laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of quantitative research methods with regards to political campaigns.
