The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), established in 1893, is a private, national, freestanding institution and has operated as such since 1967. MCW has proudly produced more than 14,000 alumni and currently has more than 1,200 students currently enrolled in educational programs. The student population including 820 medical students and more than 450 graduate students, and is the 11th largest medical school in the United States. MCW faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 250 in fellowship training through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the office of postdoctoral Education. MCW provides continuing medical education to more than 40,000 health professional registrants per year.

Additionally, MCW is a strong community partner, employing more than 1,500 faculty and 3,400 staff practicing at three major affiliates-Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center, as well as many other hospitals and clinics in the Milwaukee Area. Each year, MCW providers care for more than 410,000 patients, representing more than 1.7 million patient visits. In FY 2010-11,  College faculty conducted more than 2,200 research studies including clinical trials. MCW faculty received approximately $175 million in external support for research, teaching training and related purposes of which approximately $161 million was for research. In FY 2011, the College received approximately $92.9 million in NIH funding, which ranked 43rd among the nation's 136 medical schools.
