Founded in 1957, Frederick Community College (FCC) is one of 16 community colleges in Maryland and is an accredited, public, two-year, degree-granting institution. More than 18,000 people take credit and noncredit classes at FCC each year. Our main campus is centrally-located in the state about an hour from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in Frederick, Maryland.

FCC offers more than 70 academic and continuing education programs and awards associate in arts, associate of arts in teaching, associate in applied science and associate in science degrees and certificates of accomplishment in more than 50 fields of study. In fall 2010, the college employed 962 full- and part-time employees.

FCC’s student population includes students recently graduated from high school (43 percent), open campus students completing their high school requirements with dual credit college classes, Adult Basic Education students, and nontraditional adult students. The Continuing Education (CE) division’s Institute for Learning in Retirement offers a relaxed learning environment for students 55 and up. Kids on Campus summer and after-school classes are also available through CE.

Many FCC students select transfer programs and continue their education at four-year colleges. FCC also offers career-oriented programs to prepare students for immediate employment after graduation. The Continuing Education/Customized Training division offers noncredit courses in business, computers, real estate, and personal enrichment, as well as contractual training for business and industry.
In addition to traditional-aged students working on their first two years of college, many working adults take classes at night, on weekends, or through nontraditional formats. The average age of FCC students is about 26; about 62 percent attend part time, and 62 percent plan to transfer to four-year colleges. The college understands the special scheduling and counseling needs of the adult part-time student and offers convenient evening and weekend classes, as well as online courses.

As of spring 2010:
• 62% of FCC students either graduated or transferred after four years compared to 51% of community college students statewide.
• 94% of FCC registered nurse graduates passed their licensure exam compared to 89% of RN students statewide.
• More than half of Frederick County residents who attend public and private colleges and universities in Maryland attended FCC.
• FCC is more diverse than Frederick County.
• 60% of FCPS graduates attend FCC.
• 97% of FCC graduates report satisfaction with their educational goal achievement.
• 89% of FCC graduates report satisfaction with job preparation.
• 98% of employers report satisfaction with the training received by their employees through contract training programs.

The Opossumtown Pike campus, home to FCC since 1970, now includes 12 buildings. A state-of-the-art Classroom/Student Center opened in 2010. A leased space 3.5 miles from the main campus houses FCC’s Advanced Workforce Training Center. The newly-renovated facility opened in 2009 and includes the Construction Management and Building Trades Institute (the largest college construction training facility in Maryland) and the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Institute.
