Position Summary

The Nursing Online Instruction Specialist will provide expertise and knowledge on various pedagogical approaches and best practices to support the online and hybrid course delivery in the Nursing program. The Online Instruction Specialist will collaborate with the Assistant Dean Nursing (ADNur) and department faculty to design innovative efforts in the development and delivery of high-quality online virtual experiences, and ensure that appropriate and equity-based curriculum content and clinical teaching, retention, and completion benchmarks are met in accordance with program learning outcomes and accreditation standards. The Online Instruction Specialist will assist faculty and staff in the development of independent learning activities, that may contain a criterion-based objective, knowledge acquisition exercises, practice activities, and assessments that engage the learner in online learning environment. The Online Instruction Specialist may also be asked to provide ideas and content to drive the development of interactive activities/games, simulations, and self-assessments that support the learning objectives. The Online Instruction Specialist will collaborate with Instructional Design, Engagement and Accessibility Lab (IDEA Lab) to ensure that course designs and online activities are delivered according to the Division of Learning standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Works collaboratively with Nursing subject matter experts to develop and guide instructional design projects both in the classroom and virtually. Research the incoming changes in the NCLEX nursing licensing examination and works with faculty and IDEA Lab to revise online content, student-centered activities, and course examinations that support the changes. This includes applying instructional design principles and quality assessment techniques to create pedagogically sound learning interactions through evaluation and application of educational theory, assessment techniques, course development and integration of instructional technologies for diverse learners.

Works collaboratively with the IDEA Lab and nursing faculty subject matter experts to manage digital accessibility initiatives that adhere to universally accepted guidelines. This includes providing support and training to both faculty and staff, researching and evaluating emerging educational software that supports teaching and learning with an emphasis on accessibility, conducting audits of the Nursing program’s academic web presence, provide curriculum mapping and data analytics to improve the aligning of content, skills, and assessment, and drafting appropriate guidelines relating to digital accessibility.

Provides leadership and coordination of implementation and ongoing education of AACC's instructional technology systems, in collaboration with the IDEA Lab, to deliver these resources to the Nursing program in an effective and efficient manner. This includes but is not limited to training, resource creation, trouble-shooting support, and recommending processes and guidelines, and consulting on use.

Designs and teaches faculty professional development online courses covering best practices in teaching online, instructional design, and digital accessibility. In addition, works collaboratively with academic teams in the support of teaching within college specific credit bearing courses.

Provides expertise to faculty on evaluating and providing feedback relating to online courses through Canvas. This includes recommending best practices, instructional strategies, and application of quality assurance guidelines for online learning and instruction.

Assist in the direct integration of technology into the course curricula, extra-curricular, and co-curricular learning of Nursing program and the Division of Learning. Assist in uploading and formatting educational material within Canvas.

Represent the Nursing program on College Committees as appropriate. Other Duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Two to five years of relevant experience instructional design.
  2. A bachelor’s degree or completion of a specialized certification program in health and/or health technology
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management software.
  4. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Must work independently and be able to prioritize work duties and responsibilities.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work collegiately with a culturally diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a regular basis.
  7. Ability to travel to a variety of clinical agencies.



Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Active Maryland Registered Nursing License.
  2. Two to three years of experience teaching in a two-year community college.
  3. Advance certifications in Instructional Design.
