GSE seeks a Nuclear Physicist/Analyst to become an integral part of a diverse team of Scientist, Developers, ISSO's, Cloud and Web professionals to provide the design, configuration, implementation, and maintenance of the various analytic applications, tools, sensors and hardware that are required to support the Data Analysis Center Threat Evaluation & Reduction (DAC-TER) Branch with the Customs & Border Protection Agency. This position is in Sterling, VA (near Dulles Airport).

A day in the life (a general sampling of the things you may do in a given day):

  • Work with a team of physicists and data scientists making tools to support homeland security operations.
  • Liaises with external government entities (client and support organizations). Invents and implements methods and algorithms for threat determination and failure analysis.
  • Writes and reviews code to accomplish mission goals.
  • Gives input on staffing levels and allocation.
  • Reviews changes requests and proposals; strategizes future operations.
  • Candidate shall be involved in support of one or more DAC-TER projects, including ERNIE, Health (ARCHER & ARMOR), BNNA, wireless data transfer (SWIFT) and x-ray image assessment (AAXI).
  • This person will develop tools and provide analytic services using these tools.
  • Candidate will support integration of databases relevant for health, threat, and operation analysis.
  • Candidate should be capable of
    • Designing, creating, documenting, deploying, and maintaining GUI-based business applications
    • Assisting with database models, research, design, performance, and capacity issues, as well as other tasks associated with web development
    • Analyzing the current system (process/data) and composing the necessary documentation
    • Transferring prototype tools, developed by developers/physicists, to production or creating mature source code from analytic tools
    • Participating in design of visualization tools displaying a variety of health, threat recognition and operation tools
    • Porting existing tools into Java or Python languages
    • Updating tools/software to run SQL queries and serve web pages
    • Writing and updating manuals and software documentation
    • Developing software and new methodologies for analyzing data

What we are expecting from you (i.e. the qualifications you must have):

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or Technical degree with 5+ years of experience. MS preferred. Nuclear physics a plus.
  • 5 years of practice and demonstrated tool(s) creation.
  • Understanding of nuclear or particle detection methods, coursework in quantum mechanics, electronics, and statistical mechanics.
  • Knowledge of RPM and NII functionality, as well as advanced (for senior) programming capacity in Java and/or Python, writing complex SQL queries (C++, ADO.NET is plus) and use experience with MS tools (e.g., Excel, Project, Visio, and Access) is required, as is knowledge of advanced statistical methods.
  • Expertise and hands-on experience with Python. Familiarity with common data analysis packages such as NumPy, MatPlotLib, and Pandas. Understanding of classical statistics and machine learning.
  • Familiarity with databases helpful but not required; MS SQL preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team of scientists, programmers, and IT professionals in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills. Able to present work to outside clients.
  • Active Secret clearance
