The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
The Atlantic is looking for a nimble producer/reporter with sharp news judgment to join a team launching a weekly news podcast. You should have a passion for creating intellectually rigorous and easily digestible audio journalism. The right candidate will be skilled at creative use of tape and bring a witty, compelling approach to covering the most important stories from our website and magazine.
You'll work alongside the show's host and editor as well as a small team of producers and our engineer. You'll also collaborate with the executive producer of Atlantic Audio.
What you'll do:
Pitch, book, and produce interviews, non-narrated pieces, and stories based on - and independent of - the magazine and website, and proactively offer ideas as news demands it.
Report out and voice original audio stories.
Work with the team to plan and execute compelling programs weeks or even months in advance.
Participate in newsroom brainstorms and processes and partner with The Atlantic's writers and editors in making our writing come to life in audio.
Conduct field reporting, background research, and interviews as well as making use of archival tape.
Script programs and offer edits on scripts to other members of staff.
Pre-interviews for potential sources.
Work with the engineer to sound design programs
Partner with legal, audience, copy, web editors and fact checkers to ensure editorial integrity and a vibrant web presence on all available channels.
Skills to have:
Track record of producing reported audio content and news or documentary production
At least 2 years of experience editing audio with ProTools or other audio editing programs, and willingness to learn ProTools if it's not your primary DAW.
Several years of experience reporting independently in the field for national or major market broadcast outlets or prominent journalism podcasts
Strong field production and studio production techniques
Impeccable judgment and keen understanding of journalism ethics
A network of sources in multiple disciplines and commitment to bringing voices with diverse backgrounds and worldviews to our podcast
Experience in scripting, interviewing, story development and host collaboration
Excellent at meeting deadlines and working independently
A collaborative approach to creation and an independent work ethic
Kindness, curiosity, and a direct but thoughtful approach to giving feedback
Please note:
This job may require working early mornings, late nights, or weekends as news dictates, and flexibility will be required but the mental and physical well-being of our team comes first.
Salary Minimum: $70,000, Salary Maximum: $100,000
