Job Description

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking an engineer who can make us sound our best. This person will partner with our producers to create lush and crisp programs, and must know how to organize and maintain our studios as well as facilitate remote connections to writers who could be anywhere on the planet. The right candidate will be willing to work with team members of all experience levels to ensure a seamless workflow, maintain best practices in file organization and storage, keep a thorough inventory of equipment, and help our programs sound their best.

You'll work alongside several show hosts, a small but mighty team of producers and editors as well as the executive producer of The Atlantic's audio department. This is a permanent position reporting to the executive producer of audio.

What you'll do:

  • Establish, maintain, and train producers and editors on technical systems and both in-person and virtual studio use

  • Build and maintain file management and naming systems and train team members in best practices

  • Maintain an inventory of recording and other technical equipment as well as team software and licenses

  • Mix, master, and upload programs for distribution on the Megaphone CMS

  • Work with producers to prepare and clean up music, dialogue, archival and other audio as needed

  • Assist with recording both in-studio and in the field

  • Troubleshoot technical issues with team members, assist Atlantic writers and editors in establishing the best home recording setups possible

Skills to have:

  • Mastery of and ability to teach and help team members troubleshoot issues with ProTools, Izotope products, Audio Hijack, and other podcast production software

  • Thorough understanding of podcast distribution CMSs such as Megaphone

  • Fluent understanding of remote filing and recording

  • Previous maintenance of relationships with vendors for music or other sonic libraries and remote recording platforms and ability to provide team support with them

  • Music composition skills are a plus

  • Excellent at meeting deadlines and working independently

  • A collaborative approach to creation and an independent work ethic

  • Kindness, curiosity, and a direct but thoughtful approach to giving feedback

  • Willingness to speak up on behalf of the journalistic and intellectual integrity of our programming is a must
