Job Description

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic seeks an experienced candidate for a supervisory Senior Editor position, to lead a team of editors and writers covering the United States across a range of topics. This person should have a deep familiarity with magazine journalism: assigning and editing stories including profiles, argument-driven essays, on-the-ground reporting, and timely analysis. They must be able to work in close collaboration with colleagues, and improve every story they touch with attention to prose and writerly style. And they must be energized by driving coverage forward at a high tempo. Depending on the news cycle, this editor may be required to quickly turn around essays from staff writers and freelancers, or to develop medium- and longer-term projects. The ideal candidate will be creative and opportunistic about coverage and assignments. Impeccable judgment is a must. Expertise in any particular subject area is not required, but the successful candidate will likely have interest in and familiarity with the intricacies of U.S. politics.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Spot opportunities to commission original essays and reporting

  • Assign and edit coverage of major developing stories

  • Work with staff writers to scope and develop their work

  • Mentor editors and coordinate their assignments

  • Collaborate with other teams, including art, copy, fact-check, and audience

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of editing experience

  • Enthusiasm for managing a team

  • Attention to detail

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Strong collaborative skills
