Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer will have a significant role in the analysis, testing, and the verification of the performance of the Aireon space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) air traffic surveillance system. Reporting to the Modeling and Analysis Senior Manager, the Systems Engineer will be involved with all phases of the systems engineering life cycle: Requirements, Design, Implementation and Test. Additionally, they will be conducting activities such as tests at customer and vendor sites, participating in trade studies, evaluating applications, supporting the operational environment, and analyzing data. The Systems Engineer will be encouraged to innovate and ensure that key technical milestones are met.

This individual will also collaborate in the technical and development activities of Aireon development partners, including Iridium and L3Harris. The System Engineer will also engage with engineers from other ANSPs such as NAV CANADA, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and ANSPs overseas in the development, implementation and validation of the Aireon system. A key objective is to ensure the system meets the customer requirements and performance levels.

What You'll Do
    Contribute to development of the requirements, design, implementation, test and validation of the Aireon system and subsystems
  • Author and update system level documents to include Level 1 System Requirements, System CONOPS, System and Sub-System Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Maintain a document tree and catalog repository for System level documents.
  • Lead and conduct Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) with Aireon staff, vendors and partners on open topics, new programs, etc.
  • Provide technical oversight to vendor deliverables through meetings, document reviews and witness of test events.
  • Interface with Aireon Test Engineers and provide input for upcoming test campaigns as referenced through a VRTM to ensure test cases provide sufficient coverage for new and updated requirements.
  • Perform trade studies on new or replacement technologies to the existing architecture deployed by Aireon on its operational system.
  • Interaction with Aireon partners and customers such as the FAA and NAV CANADA on the technical and operational aspects of the Aireon system
Experience & Education Requirements / EEO
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • 2+ years of Systems Engineering experience on aerospace programs
  • 2+ years with Requirements Management tools
  • Ability to work in as part of a team both internally and externally
  • Ability to produce and present technical white papers and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teams to achieve desired results
  • Ability to function in a start-up, fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Proactive communicator with strong written and verbal skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills involving complex and ambiguous issues.
  • Basic experience and understanding of Linux Operating Systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Atlassian tools such as JIRA and Confluence
  • Understanding or background with aircraft surveillance technologies such as ADS-B and/or Mode S is desirable.
  • US Citizen, or Permanent Resident (Green Card), capable of receiving a FAA SF85P public trust

  • Get onboarded and train with your manager

At 3 months we'll expect you to...

  • Understand Aireon's operational system architecture
  • Take on assigned system engineering tasks and update existing documentation/presentation to reflect the as-deployed system architecture

At 6 months we'll expect you to...

  • Lead discussions with Aireon Engineering and Vendor SMEs on planned system level updates.
  • Derive new system and sub-system requirements as required for planned updates.
  • Communicate via presentations or whitepapers on any planned requirements or design updates
  • Take on new tasking with minimal management oversight

At 12 months we'll expect you to...

  • Lead trade study analysis as required within the Systems Engineering group
  • Take on a SME role with cross functional teams in providing System Engineering inputs
  • Ensure that any new architecture update will continue to meet or exceed existing requirements
  • Represent Aireon with vendor/partner organizations on System level design reviews
About the Team

The Aireon System Engineering team is a small team that collaborates closely across both Systems, Modeling and Analysis tasks. The team also works closely with other teams and groups within Aireon to include Implementation and Test Engineering, Network Engineering and Sales/Marketing and Operational groups. Each member of the Systems Engineering team draws upon the strengths and skills across the group in both their individual as well as larger projects. Information sharing is encouraged as well as updating and maintaining shared document repositories in Sharepoint and Confluence. The team currently meets on both weekly and bi-weekly basis via MS Teams and video calls, with in office or lab sessions scheduled as required. All the team members are currently locally located within the DC-MD-VA metro area and are available for on-site meetings activities associated with the Aireon Systems Engineering group.
