Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

Aireon is seeking a DevOps Engineer to join our Integrated Product Team (IPT) within the Engineering department. Aireon delivers real-time and historic satellite-based data around the world. Join us on our journey towards Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and DevOps and contribute to our efforts in transforming our infrastructure into a more efficient, scalable, and automated environment. As a DevOps Engineer, you will deploy, configure, maintain, and secure network and infrastructure resources in public and government cloud environments following guidelines developed in collaboration with Solutions Architect and DevOps Teams. You will work closely with Service Desk and DevOps engineers in investigating production incidents to resolution using the standard Aireon incident management processes. You will be able to sharpen your skills in DevOps and cloud technologies such as Kubernetes while managing critical systems in a secure cloud environment.

Required Qualifications
    A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Three or more years of professional experience in configuration, provisioning, managing, and troubleshooting distributed and containerized environments on Azure.
  • Three or more years of professional experience managing, monitoring, and improving large-scale and highly available cloud-based platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes (primarily Azure Kubernetes Service) configuration, upgrades, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in building declarative infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code best practices.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation/orchestration technologies.
  • Proficiency in at least one high-level scripting language (PowerShell, Python, Bash, etc.) and at least one programming language (Java, JavaScript, C#, Python, .NET Framework)
  • Must have hands-on experience with Application Performance Monitoring tools such as Azure Monitor, Datadog, and others.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices.
  • Must have working experience in troubleshooting Microsoft Azure services.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Eligible to obtain SF-85P public trust.
Desired Qualifications
  • Azure Administrator certification is a plus.
  • Kubernetes Administrator certification is a plus.
  • Possess working experience in DevOps environments.
  • Possess a strong understanding of modern cloud-native software development lifecycle and practices.
  • Adept at creating and keeping standard operational procedures with solid documentation skills, including technical diagrams and written descriptions.
  • Possess working experience with standard cybersecurity practices such as identity and access management, data protection, encryption, certificate, and key management.

In the first month we'll expect you to...

  • Get onboarded and train with your manager
  • Get acclimated into the role
  • Understand the tools and different stakeholders
  • Be proactive in learning what Aireon does.
  • Understand our internal processes and cloud-based products and architectures.
  • Understand the role of IPT at Aireon and learn about IPT members' roles and responsibilities

At 3 months we'll expect you to...

  • Become knowledgeable of the company's cloud environment, including detailed knowledge of the cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, architectures, and product capabilities.
  • Create and enforce guidelines and procedures for updating operating systems, containerization, and orchestration platforms to remain current with major and minor release cycles.
  • Lead and facilitate incident triage to quickly resolve production issues within Aireon's cloud environment.

At 6 months we'll expect you to...

  • Work with a team of architects, DevOps engineers, developers, and stakeholders to identify what is needed to create and manage secure and dependable cloud environments.
  • Establish and document best practices and strategies for deploying applications and infrastructure in Aireon's cloud environments.
  • Leverage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and a DevOps approach to creating automated pipelines, deploying containerized cloud environments, and establishing immutable infrastructure.
  • Analyze incidents, identify their root causes, and work with the technical team to implement corrective actions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
  • Provide service requests and identify opportunities for automation and rearchitecting solutions to enhance outcomes and minimize repetitive and manual work.

At 12 months we'll expect you to...

  • Build and manage a robust infrastructure platform that supports the engineering team's productivity and experience, focusing on creating self-service deployment capabilities.
  • Provide support for the availability, configuration, maintenance, and monitoring of cloud environments, ensuring they run optimally and meet business needs.
  • Evaluate infrastructure and deployment architectures, leverage cloud-native technology advancements, and implement best practices that support scalability, reliability, and cost optimization.
  • Establish and improve the standards for detecting and responding to production issues proactively and efficiently.
  • Develop and improve observability capabilities to ensure a highly available and reliable cloud environment.
  • Drive accountability and collaboration with technical teams to ensure products meet their Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
About the Team
  • The Integrated Product Team primarily develops and operates secure and reliable products for internal and external customers. The team shares customer satisfaction, faster delivery, and profitability responsibility.
  • The Integrated Product Team comprises product development and product engineering.
  • You will play a critical role in the product development team.
  • The product development team is responsible for translating customer requirements and business objectives into product and sprint backlogs, designing a robust architecture to support the product goals, creating technical roadmaps, planning product releases, and improving the efficiency of people and processes, leading to faster and reliable deployment.
  • We follow the Scrum methodology and work on a 2-week sprint basis.
  • We leverage collaboration tools to connect remotely with team members and stakeholders.
  • Most team members are in the Washington, DC area, with external consultants in Canada.
