Administrative Support II - Operating Room

Under the general supervision of the OR Shift Leader, functions as the primary information link between surgeons, staff and other hospital departments, receiving and relaying pertinent information related to patients having surgery. Coordinates with Anesthesia and OR Shift Leader and OR staff to ensure the efficient management of the daily surgery schedule.

Schedule: (Full time, Benefits Eligible,Typical Hours: 32 hours per week, Night shift - Monday - Thursday 11:00pm - 7:30am)

Responsibilities
    Maintains and updates patient and departmental information related to the day's surgery schedule. Relays pertinent information promptly to the OR shift leader and anesthesia charge person.
  • Schedules add-on cases to the day's schedule
  • cancels surgeries to the day's schedule
  • tracks and logs patient through departments
  • communicates surgeon arrival/delays
  • obtains patient room numbers and pertinent medical information (isolation status, NPO status, ventilator status)
  • Manages the daily communications pertinent to the surgery schedule. Answers and relays messages for physicians and staff via phones, pagers, intercom and walkie-talkies. Handles communications in a professional, calm and efficient atmosphere within the department.
  • Directs transportation staff to transport patients to surgery based on department guidelines and OR room communication. Does so in a manner to avoid surgical delays.
  • Greets and directs physicians, staff, parents, sales representatives and visitors that make inquiries at the OR desk.
  • Maintains accurate records of the daily patient, transportation and surgeon activities for department statistics.
  • Processes urgent supply requests for imminent surgeries:
  • completes and sends case cart requisitions to Central Processing
  • completes and sends SPD requisitions
  • requisitions courier service for equipment/supply loans
  • sends for blood products
  • Orients new OR staff members to OR desk responsibilities.
  • Pursues own personal growth opportunities by identifying learning needs, attending inservice programs and sharing experiences. Seeks resources for direction, when necessary.
  • Accepts the Perioperative Services mission and performs duties in a matter to meet the mission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education:

  • High school graduate

Required Experience:

  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Basic office training with typing and computer entry experience
  • Good grooming and neat appearance
  • Good telephone etiquette and technique
  • Demonstrates dependability and adaptability
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Previous heath care background preferred
