Purpose of Position
Provide assistance to electricians by checking and completing work order requests for light tube, ballast, and fixtures changes; perform preventive maintenance service; perform small motor equipment repairs and service; obtains parts and supplies; checks, clean and replace faulty smoke detectors; respond to alarms and emergency situations; etc. Work schedule including days & hours are subject to change depending on the needs of the University and the Facilities Management Operations & Maintenance Department. This position is "mission critical.
Primary Responsibilities
Monitor interior and exterior lighting and inform supervisory personnel of problems noted. Change light bulbs, ballasts, fixtures as instructed by supervisors. Perform preventive maintenance and repair work on small motor equipment for Facilities Management by inspecting, repairing or replacing switches, cords, extension cords, brushes, motors and other parts on sweepers, scrubbers, shampooers, buffers, and other low voltage equipment. Perform preventive maintenance work to electrical systems and other equipment as directed by electricians/ supervisory personnel. Use ladders, scaffolds, personal lifts, cherry pickers and buckets to replace outdoor lighting and lighting in high-ceiling facilities such as the HPE pool area, racquetball courts, main activity floor, Regents Hall, etc Assist Electricians to safely install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, equipment, circuits, appliances, and related electrical controls and devices. Assist with replacing switches, sockets, receptacles, fuses, insulators, and other related items in electrical systems, fixtures, and appliances. Immediately responds to service/maintenance calls such as electrical outage calls; assist the electricians,with trouble-shooting the problem; help analyze the situation; take appropriate action as instructed by electricians or supervision in either making repairs or contacting outside contractors. Assist with examining and testing elements of electrical systems such as control circuits, fire alarm fixtures, and motors to locate faults such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, etc. Respond to emergency trouble calls during and after regular working hours as required by supervisory personnel. Work overtime and adjust schedule to work weekends and evenings, as needed to accomplish tasks. Assist with switch-gear and high voltage maintenance. Perform related duties as assigned and assist other trades as needed.
Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED;Minimum of 1 years work related experience; Vocational/Technical certification in electrical services or related field preferred. Valid driver's license required Ability to perform work duties requiring maximum physical exertion on a regularly recurring basis; Must be physically able to : 1. Work at great heights in personnel lifts, cherry pickers, buckets, on ladders & scaffolds 2. Repetitively bend, stoop, twist, reach, stand and walk for long periods of time, climb stairs. 3. Work overhead and in confined, cramped spaces such as manholes, crawlspaces, pipe chases, trenched areas, attics, ceilings, etc. 4. Work in weather extremes as necessary to repair outdoor light poles/fixtures, underground cables, etc. 5. Use of all types of hand, power, and pressurized tools & equipment related to position. Must possess: good mathematical skills, sound judgment/common sense, detail orientation, organizational skills, problem solving skills, good communication skills, the ability to read and interpret blueprints/schematics, basic computer/office equipment skills.
