The Assistant Director is one of three professional staff whose time is largely devoted to the academic advising of 900 undergraduate students and 50 post baccalaureate pre-health students pursuing majors in the College, NHS, MSB or SFS, as well as interacting with the main campus faculty who teach them, other advisors, and the team's administrative support staff. They join other Academic Counselors and Advising Deans of the College in support of the Dean of the College in carrying out their responsibility (as defined by Georgetown University Faculty Handbook) for the general effectiveness of the instructional programs of the College, and in carrying out academic policies and regulations. Reporting to the Director of Pre-Health Advising, the Assistant Director has duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Advise first and second year pre-health students on the specifics of the necessary exploration, preparation, and processes for application to health professions schools including understanding academic requirements, finding clinical opportunities, gaining research experiences, rendering community service, planning for admission tests, selecting schools, and navigating application cycles and timelines
  • Document appointments, track the population, maintain records and statistics with assist with production of an annual report
  • Update and maintain the pre-health website including pre-health alumni updates: work collaboratively with College marketing and communications staff to develop powerful, targeted content for pre-health website/emails/external advertising for Post Bac Program
  • Organize and execute mock interviews for pre-health students in conjunction with the Cawley Career Center
  • Support curricular and extracurricular pre-health professions offerings
  • Assist with Pre-Health Application Workshops
  • Manage all administrative work of the Pre-Health Recommendation Committee
  • Administer correspondence through the Pre-Health email address
  • Manage all aspects of the Early Admission Program with Georgetown University School of Medicine
  • Assist with the writing of committee letters of reference for students applying to health professions schools
  • Track health professions school admissions data and utilize metrics to analyze Georgetown applicants' outcomes compared to national data
  • Maintain a database of alumni who have matriculated to health professions schools
  • Maintain the Canvas course for health professions advising in conjunction with the other Assistant Director of Health Professions Advising
  • Assist the Director of Pre-Health Advising as needed
  • Consistent with Georgetown's commitment to cura personalis, this position, though primarily an academic and programmatic advisor, support and advise students on any and all matters which interfere with personal well-being and academic success; and make frequent referrals to, and have regular contact with, campus partner offices, and is well-versed in the services those offices provide
  • Participate - as do all Advising Dean staff in various roles - in College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, and Commencement activities


Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • 2+ years' experience advising students on careers in the health professions.
  • Broad knowledge of health professions admission practices, industry trends, and best practices in health professions advising
  • Ability to work closely with students, alumni, and faculty as well as build strong relationships with campus partners
  • Ability to develop relationships with health professions school representatives.
  • Experience creating and leading programs and events
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • High level of strategic and critical thinking.
  • Ability to identify cultural nuances and navigate a complex network of constituents with sensitivity, poise and diplomacy
  • An understanding of Georgetown's Jesuit and Catholic identity
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and set priorities
  • Strong orientation to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player
  • Managerial experience
