Job Description
FSA, a rapidly growing professional services company delivering highly qualified personnel in support of the government's mission, has an immediate vacancy for a Paralegal IV.

This position supports the Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) at the USAO. The FLU litigates debt collection issues and enforces collection of criminal and civil debts owed to the United States or to victims of federal crime. Civil recoveries are generally from delinquent student loans and small business loans, environmental penalties, bankruptcy judgments, and civil fraud prosecutions and penalties. Criminal recoveries are for special assessments, restitution which is returned to crime victims, fines and penalties.

A Paralegal III is responsible for performing a variety of paralegal and technical work requiring specialized knowledge of processes, procedures and practices to support legal activities within the Financial Litigation Unit and the Civil Divison, to include:

  • Works with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), investigators, federal agents and support staffs to recommend the most effective strategy to meet litigation needs. Develops alternative methods and encourages the use of automated support for trial preparation and presentation
  • Assists attorneys and legal support staff in organizing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing, processing, and loading documents into a database. Ensures documents are organized for efficient automated storage and retrieval by preparing appropriate indices, defining data file search criteria and indexing/coding fields. Monitors the progress of computer data entry effort. Prepares computerized trial presentation programs.
  • Legal work and research related to the collection of civil debts and criminal fines, restitution, and bonds
  • Conduct and complete case reviews and accurately and clearly state relevant facts, assist with monitoring the progress of debts requiring enforcement, and initiate actions by drafting rouiine, with the supervision of a lawyer, legal pleadings, liens, writs of execution, garnishments, correspondence, and other documents
  • Perform asset searches using all appropriate methods, including electronic searches
  • Analyze and evaluate facts and legal issues of cases, research legal opinions, and recommend and execute a course of action for collection of high-dollar cases
  • lnitiate and prepare, with the supervision of a lawyer, civil discovery, including arranging and assisting with debtor examinations, setting up depositions, and developing discovery documents
  • Assist assigned attorney in preparation for hearings by developing, scheduling, summarizing and organizing discovery: interviewing debtors and witnesses: and researching case law
  • Contact debtors and attorneys while demonstrating a clear knowledge of the facts of the case, and conducting himself/herself in a professional, ethical and appropriate fashion
A Paralegal III must meet the following qualifications:
  • Paralegal Certificate
  • At least two years of legal experience required. Collections experience preferred
  • Sound working knowledge of legal system, legal research procedures, and sources of information
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, analytic ability, and thorough knowledge of legal research tools
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and telecommunications
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Access
This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
