If so, we are seeking someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking a Lab Manager / Technician for our Biological Sciences Group, residing within the Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD).

The Lab Manager / Technician will support multiple technical thrust areas across our group. As part of the Research & Exploratory Development Department, our group conducts basic and applied research, in the Biological Sciences, to make critical contributions to national security and national health challenges. In this role, you will serve as an integral member of the group, contributing to general lab maintenance as well as sponsored projects and internal research efforts. You will use your excellent organizational and problem-solving skills to keep processes running efficiently in our new facility, coordinating service contracts, ordering consumables, and optimizing facility function. You will also have the opportunity to leverage your wet lab training to perform tasks using standard laboratory protocols, including cell culture and maintenance, basic DNA cloning, nucleic acid extraction, PCR and reverse transcription PCR, clinical sample handling and preparation, sequencing and library preparation and basic data analysis.

As a Lab Manager / Technician you will:

  • Act as a general biology Lab Manager.

    • Overseeing day-to-day operations of BSL2/BSL2+ facilities
    • Organizing equipment maintenance and service contracts
    • Supporting basic procurement needs
  • Act as a Technician, performing tasks utilizing standard laboratory protocols including to support ongoing projects. Tasks may include:
    • Cell culture and maintenance
    • Nucleic acid extraction
    • PCR and reverse transcription PCR
    • Clinical sample handling and preparation
    • Sequencing library preparation
    • Data analysis


Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelors degree plus 3+ years professional experience contributing to research efforts in the Biological Sciences.
  • Have experience with multiple of the following skills:
    • Cell culture and maintenance
    • Nucleic acid extraction
    • Data analysis
    • Sequencing library preparation
    • Clinical sample handling and preparation
    • PCR and reverse transcription PCR
  • Have strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to contribute to teams from any position.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Masters Degree and 5+ years of professional experience in the Biological Sciences or relevant field.
  • Have formal experience managing a biological research facility, including overseeing equipment setup and maintenance.
  • Have formal experience with clinical sample handling and preparation.
  • Have a demonstrated track record of productive collaborations with multidisciplinary teams.
