The Director, OI Strategy and Innovation is a seasoned business strategist and advisor with responsibility for partnering with OptumInsight executives to provide thought leadership, strategic direction, market analysis, and support accelerating growth objectives. This person must convince leaders and operators of his / her value, earn their trust and time, and work collaboratively to build actionable strategies.


The Director, OI Strategy and Innovation will work with executive and business unit leadership to frame the market, identify market opportunities, build analytics-based market-level strategies, drive acceleration of significant growth paths (OI's "big bets") and identify and execute on strategic M&A priorities. In order to do this, the Director, Strategy will have a strong understanding of competitive dynamics, customer needs, market trajectory, and Optum capabilities across the healthcare landscape.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to development and execution of market level strategies (e.g., Payer, Provider, State Government, Life Sciences) and think through synergies across strategies for OI, Optum and UHG
  • Ideate and drive acceleration of Growth Big Bets and Market Disruption / Innovation, which are key components of OI market level and segment strategy. Collaborate with product and business leadership to develop concepts further through the lifecycle, from overall strategy through to product ideation and definition, and business model development, work through buyer segments, pricing models, competitive differentiation, etc.
  • Collaborate and join broader Optum or UHG work teams in cross-enterprise initiatives, such as Digital, Consumerism and Global
  • Support Optum Insight initiatives spanning growth strategy and/or operational excellence by directly scoping, initiating, planning, and executing projects
  • Deliver data-driven insights to support actionable strategic direction, corporate prioritization, corporate development and strategy communication (Executive management, Board, investors, company)
  • Solve unique and complex problems requiring integrated solutions with broad impact on the business
  • Collaborate on strategic M&A prioritization and execution, building strategic analyses on priority targets with the goal of progressing key deals that enhance Optum's Insight's overall value proposition
  • Support development of team culture and approaches within broader OI, help codify best practices
  • In partnership with OI Strategy leaders, convene and lead cross-functional teams to execute key large-scale projects
  • Influence OI Senior Leadership to adopt new ideas, or pursue new business opportunities through strong strategic analysis and business case development
  • Develop strong relationships with key Optum BU leaders

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree
  • 5+ years of experience directly and/or indirectly managing people in delivering strategic/advisory services or other analytic/services offerings
  • 5+ years of experience developing market overviews, understanding competitive positioning, analyzing market trends, and understanding customer needs
  • 3+ years of Healthcare experience
  • Able to travel up to 25% (project dependent)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA and 2+ years of post-MBA experience at a leading strategy consulting firm
  • Solid analytic, modeling and communication skills
  • Operational experience (operations, product development, marketing, finance, sales, etc.)
  • Experience and understanding of healthcare data and analytics, digital technology, healthcare administrative functions, and/or healthcare clinical workflows

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $94,500 to $171,700.
