Job Description

The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

We are seeking an associate editor to join the Atlantic's Culture team, with a focus on supporting the expansion of books coverage across the publication. This person will assist senior editors working on Books, Culture, and original fiction, providing editorial support as well as growing their own editing load. The ideal person for this role will be creative and self-starting, with several years of editorial experience, a love of books and great writing, and a strong interest in literary culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate ideas and work with editors to commission and edit stories
  • Fact-check Books and Culture stories
  • Liaise with publishers and agents as needed
  • Help editors with story production and sells
  • Coordinate with other teams, including the print team, copy, fact-check, projects, art, and audience
  • Read original fiction submissions, manage fiction inventory, and prepare fiction for publication
  • Help brainstorm reading lists and execute affiliate links strategy across The Atlantic
  • Occasionally pitch and write reported stories
  • Occasionally contribute to the Books Briefing newsletter

Skills and qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of editorial experience
  • Attention to detail
  • Enthusiasm for and familiarity with book-related topics
  • Experience working in a digital environment

The position is full-time, and based in New York or Washington, D.C.
