Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a UX/UI Designer and Developer to join the Communications Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. This position is eligible to work remotely or onsite.

Communications' Creative Studio at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking someone who is an expert in UX/UI design and front-end development to join our team of designers, illustrators, and animators. You will be a natural at understanding human-computer interaction design (HCID), in coming up with elegant solutions to improve our applications, and in front-end development using WordPress. You should also be an expert in HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript along with experience with theming, plug-ins, and other customization abilities. We work in a fast-paced environment, so the ideal UX/UI Designer and Developer willhave thenecessary skill setto hit the ground running as soon as we bring on new projects.These skills will include being self-motivated, taking initiative, and successfully bringing projects to completion within established timelines.Applicants who have experience with scientific or nonprofit institutions will be given prime consideration.

The internal working title for this position is Information Systems Associate II, however the final level will be determined commensurate with an individual's education and experience.

Essential Functions
    Primary UX/UI designer for whoi.edu and other Institutional web efforts using Wordpress
  • Provide UX/UI design and development support to Research and Administration's web and digital communications efforts
  • Meet with clients to determine technical requirements
  • Collaborate closely with WHOI's Web Applications Development team to create themes and plugins in WordPress
  • Use analysis and reporting to improve user experience
  • Monitor and investigate SEO issues, live web performance, and determine appropriate resolutions
  • Create and maintain digital assets, such as interface design files, wireframes, and interactive mockups using Adobe XD, Balsamiq, and Photoshop.
  • Design, build, and maintain highly reusable JavaScript, HTML and CSS code for websites, email, and other digital communications, marketing, and fundraising.
  • Understand the limitations of our tech stack and nonprofit model and provide technical advice wherever necessary.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Writing/editing skills a plus

Education & Experience

The UX/UI Designer and Developer must have both a demonstrated artistic/creative ability and a superior knowledge of design and information visualization principles with continuing knowledge of innovations and trends within those fields. The candidate must also have a portfolio of demonstrated skills in front end development with WordPress.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Multimedia Design, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline with 4+ years experience in a related field with several years of relevant experience, or demonstrated competency as an Information Systems Associate I, or significant, progressive
    independence and skill development at the Information Systems Assistant III or Senior Information Systems Assistant levels or equivalent positions on the other technical ladders, or equivalent work experience in the absence of a formal degree.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 4+ years' experience as a UX/UI designer.
  • 3+ years' experience as a front-end developer.
  • Expert knowledge of CSS, CSS extension languages (Less, Sass), and CSS preprocessor tools.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML5 and its best practices.
  • Proficiency in designing interfaces and building clickable prototypes.
  • A history of deconstructing user behavior to create an improved experience for users, showcased in the form of blog posts, articles, screencasts, etc.
  • Proficiency using Git version control.
  • Google Analytics
  • SEO Experience
  • Extensive experience with the Adobe suite, Balsamiq or similar wireframing software, specifically with mockups, web and email design
  • Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients
  • Adaptive design eye and skill
  • Excellent communication skills
