POSITION SUMMARY
A Registered Professional Nurse accountable for the coordination and delivery of patient care on multiple units of service.  Responsible for the implementation of nursing policies and procedures, and has the authority to implement standards of practice as well as to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes.  He/She ensures and guides nursing staff to provide the care required by all patient population.  May act, when requested, as a representative of Hospital Administration.  The House Supervisor’s responsibilities encompass compliance with The Joint Commission standards, CMS, OSHA, IDPH, Illinois Nurse Practice Act, and state regulations.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintains and respects all patient rights and care for the patient in a dignified and compassionate matter.
  2. Keeps job and patient information confidential at all times.
  3. Able to complete Registered Nurse position duties and responsibilities when necessary.
  4. Assesses physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and family specifically related to age.
  5. Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases and uses available resources in the assessment process with regard to age.
  6. Coordinates patient care by completing daily shift assignments based on patient acuity; making appropriate room assignments for patients.
  7. Assists in development of discharge planning on multiple units.
  8. Transcribes and enters physician order into the electronic medical record when necessary.
  9. Assists RN’s in assessing patients who are experiencing condition changes.
  10. Responds to all codes and assists staff as needed.
  11. Performs rounds in multiple departments throughout shift.
  12. Audits charts routinely.
  13. Communicates shift concerns to the appropriate managers.
  14. Serves as administrative authority for the smooth function of all units on assigned shift.  Notifies administrator or manager of urgent concerns during the shift.  When the concern is non-urgent, notifies manager by phone message or email.
  15. Receives employee, resident and family grievances.  Refers information to appropriate managers.
  16. Assists RNs in completing incident reports and employee injury reports.
  17. Assists in survey compliance, quality assurance and staff development duties, as assigned.  Notifies manager of identified learning needs.
  18. Counsels personnel, as indicated.  Completes appropriate documentation and communicates with manager.
  19. Assures that staffing is in place in multiple departments.
  20. Receives employee call-offs.  Records call-offs and updates schedule.  Notifies managers of call-offs in their units via absence report.
  21. Replaces personnel for absences and vacancies for upcoming shift(s).
  22. Works with the staffing schedule and nurse manager to assure that vacancies are filled. 
  23. Obtains supplies from Materials Management after hours.
  24. Obtains medications from pharmacy after hours following proper procedures.
  25. Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis.  Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means and keeps educational records current.
  26. Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the hospital.
  27. Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, orientation and teaching of staff.  Participates in the peer interviewing process.
  28. Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  29. Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; also participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care.  Has attended 20 hours of continuing education every two years.
  30. Attends 80% of all scheduled unit meetings held, and reads the meeting minutes.
  31. Assumes other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  1. Must be a graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing and have current Illinois license. 
  2. Must have a current Illinois license.

Experience
  1. Must be currently CPR certified with ACLS, NRP and PALS certification and previous telemetry experience desirable. 
  2. Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure. 
  3. Must have good teaching and communication skills
  4. The ability to operate designated computer equipment.
  5. TNCC, TNS and ENPC preferred.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  1. Requires long periods of standing at times.
  2. Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  3. Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  4. Frequent lifting and/or handling of light weight items up to 35 pounds.
  5. Frequent repositioning of patients.
  6. Ability to perform CPR – a strenuous activity.
