Job Description

Focused on delivering unsurpassed services in support of law enforcement and homeland security, FSA Federal, a rapidly growing joint venture owned by trusted solutions providers SAIC and Amentum, has a vacancy for a Paralegal II. In this role, you will be supporting the overall mission of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO). The Paralegal will assist with a large Civil case.

Under the direction and approval of the government, the Paralegal will support the mission of the USAO and assist AUSAs with investigations, witness interviewing, witness preparation, discovery, pretrial motions, trial strategy, and settlement in the civil case. These services include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Works with AUSAs, investigators, federal agents, and support staff to determine the most effective strategy to develop referrals and meet litigation needs. Helps the USAO develop new referrals by ensuring a good working relationship with client agencies and the public, and by assisting in coordinating with federal, state and local agencies.
  • Performs legal research on particular issues and cases identified by the attorney in support of the litigation. Research methods include searching for legal precedents in opinions, existing legal files, textbooks, legal periodicals, statutes and regulations, and computerized research methods. Has knowledge of legal research software such as Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis.
  • Performs factual research on particular issues and cases identified by the attorney in support of the litigation. Methods include researching on-line resources, reviewing journals and periodicals, researching public records, reviewing financial documents, performing asset searches, and conducting public records searches.
  • Organizes case-related documents for attorney review, discovery, and trial preparation using document review platforms such as Relativity or Eclipse. Tracks and manages documents by, among other things, preparing and maintaining digests and indexes of documents and other evidence, organizing and reviewing documents once loaded into document review or management platforms, and producing documents as needed to meet discovery and trial obligations.
  • Reviews and analyzes documents produced in discovery or in response to subpoenas, including but not limited to creating queries, tagging documents, and writing up analyses, summaries and chronologies of reviewed documents.
  • Receives incoming pleadings and correspondence and determines appropriate action while noting time limitations for the government's response.
  • Prepares initial drafts of a variety of legal documents for review by AUSAs, such as complaints, motions, responses, briefs, tolling agreements, and settlement agreements. Incorporates legal references and includes an analysis of precedents related to the case.
  • Assists AUSAs with interviewing witnesses and potential complainants concerning violations of federal law.
  • Assists AUSAs and support staff in the production of exhibit and witness lists, exhibit notebooks, and/or demonstrative exhibits for trial.
  • Attends court proceedings or other key litigation or investigation events, and assists attorney(s) in presenting case, as needed.
  • Provides administrative support to AUSAs by arranging for procurement of service and supplies, maintaining records, and preparing reports of expenditures and case results.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
A Paralegal II must meet the following qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required. Paralegal Certificate strongly desired.
  • 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis is required.
  • Automated litigation support experience very helpful
  • Basic paralegal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform basic legal research
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook), Adobe, Eclipse, Relativity, Trial Director, and CaseMap is a plus.
  • Ability to use, understand and maintain directories, personnel lists and other guides and references to provide a variety of
    information on the office and to refer questions to other offices.
  • Skilled in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Skilled in operating a telephone answering machine.
  • Skilled in operating a computer terminal or personal computer, using a standard computer keyboard with additional function keys to
    produce a wide range of documents. A qualified typist is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security Access
This position requires U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation.
