Senior Editor, Digital

Remote, Full-time, Regular, Exempt

Reports to: Managing Editor

ABOUT THE ROLE

The PBS NewsHour is adding a Senior Editor, Digital to play a key leadership role on a new team of reporters focused on improving and expanding the quality and reach of our journalism to better reflect and serve communities across the United States. You will help establish more ground-level reporting in largely under covered communities across the country, including on issues of systemic racism and inequality and the disparities they create. As an editor who is experienced in guiding local or regional reporting with a national audience in mind, you will help steer the story selection and development, while also identifying where we can provide local perspectives on issues already in the national spotlight.

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

You'll get to know your team and the wider organization, and how each group functions independently as well as part of the whole. You'll establish key relationships with your peers, and make decisions about our coverage in senior-level planning meetings. By day 30, you'll contribute to enterprising breaking news, features, and analysis reporting for the website, social platforms and other digital outlets, and also establish early goals for your reporters and our coverage as a whole.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

You are putting together coverage plans for your reporters, on both breaking and longer-form, in-depth news reporting. You bring terrific ideas to pitch meetings and help coach colleagues to develop better pitches. You're regularly identifying future stories of interest to existing and potential PBS NewsHour audiences, and focusing your team to reflect those interests. You've developed trust with senior leadership and you have grown your own skills, shown by improved reporting, or new storytelling formats from your team.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • A track record of developing and overseeing beat coverage and managing a team.
  • 7-10 years of journalism experience, a specific interest and experience reporting on diverse communities preferred; degree in journalism or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with AP Style
  • Experience in local, regional, and national news content creation, including breaking news and feature story telling in digital platforms.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Comprehensive and competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Generous 403(B) employer match
  • Holiday and paid leave programs
  • Competitive parental leave policy
  • Tuition reimbursement

ABOUT THE PBS NEWSHOUR

Since 1973, the PBS NewsHour has been grounded in public service journalism. With the creation of this new team, we hope to broaden our balanced and in-depth news coverage through better representation of the communities we serve.

Innovative and fast-paced, life at the NewsHour is focused on collaboration, trust, and above all, finding new, fair, thorough and enterprising ways of covering the news. NewsHour is unique in that the team is small and tight-knit, and must accomplish what no other daily news organization does: be the gold-standard of reporting for a nightly broadcast, and also to crucial digital platforms.
