Job Description
Position Information

Venable is seeking a multidisciplined editor, in our Washington, DC headquarters, with the skill to turn our attorneys' expertise into meaningful, timely content, custom made for those ready to listen. Together, with a team of creatives and Marketing leadership, the editor will help build and implement content strategies for practice groups that support the audience journey from prospect to client, and for firmwide initiatives that amplify the brand. Drawing upon a minimum of five years of professional experience as a content editor, manager, or strategist, the ideal candidate blends an almost insatiable curiosity with an unfailing belief in objective-led marketing and passion for order. As comfortable in a meeting with partners as they are in an analytics dashboard, the editor will use web data, SEO know-how, and buyer personas to help guide the development of content aligned with the firm's business goals and our clients' needs. With a talent for words, the editor will strengthen the firm's voice and ensure all publications have purpose, wielding a red pen to rescue a buried lede or insert a well-placed call-to-action.

Responsibilities for this role include

  • Collaborate with Marketing leadership and across functions to build effective content marketing strategies and editorial plans aligned with the marketing, business-development, and communications priorities of the firm, its practice groups, and various initiatives.
  • Work with the firm's Creative Services team, Business Development, and attorneys to develop brand-centric, client-valued content that reflects the firm voice and brand guidelines, is focused on target audiences, and complies with all firm ethical, legal, and compliance policies.
  • Leverage audience personas, SEO data, web analytics, and client-industry trends to develop ideas for new content.
  • Perform gap analyses to identify content growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Technology to conduct content audits and assess performance with the goal of increasing reader/prospect engagement and retention.
  • Partner with colleagues in Creative Services, and the Business Development, Events, Technology, Business Development, and Public Relations teams to execute content activities, and manage editorial calendars.
  • Edit attorney insights, alerts, and thought leadership to ensure compliance with firm voice and business objectives.

Qualifications for this role include

  • Minimum of five (5) years of content development/planning, marketing, journalism, editing, or writing experience (e.g., editorial or social media content, advertising, brochures, proposals etc.,) preferably with a law firm or professional-services organization, editorial publication, or marketing agency.
  • Ability to think critically and employ content development and planning strategies.
  • Extensive experience using social media, email, websites/blogs, and other content-distribution tools to grow brand awareness and business.
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of SEO tools and application, and content analytics.
  • Experience leveraging audience or buyer personas to develop targeted content.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, and the proven ability to create persuasive and targeted custom content.
  • Strong project management skills and active participation to accomplish projects and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Proven ability to establish credibility with the firm's marketing colleagues and attorneys through the development of quality work, proactive communication, and effective collaboration.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Word.
  • Experience with content databases and document assembly tools is desired.
  • A cover letter is required for this position. Please include with your cover letter, in the same document, an example of an editorial plan or calendar you created.
