DEFINITION: Leads a crew engaged in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and gas equipment, pipes, and fixtures. Performs journey-level plumber/gas fitter work. Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Serves as a lead worker, guiding, coordinating, and reviewing the work of a plumbing maintenance crew. Receives and analyzes work order requests. Troubleshoots plumbing and gas system malfunctions.
Estimates time and materials required for a job. Maintains records of project expenses and work performed. Ensures that there is an appropriate inventory of supplies and materials.
Receives and responds to work order requests and emergency situations. Assigns tasks to plumbers and others. Ensures that work is completed in accordance with established standards and schedules.
Installs, repairs, and maintains pipes, plumbing fixtures and systems. Installs and repairs washbasins, faucets, fountains, water closets, water heaters, traps, and vents. Unclogs drains. Tests pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges.
Joins pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing and welding equipment. Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings. Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipes using hand and power tools or machines.
Reads blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Determines the layout of plumbing, water supply, waste, and drainage systems.
Lifts and carries plumbing supplies, fixtures, equipment, tools, and materials. Operates hand and power tools. Bends, stoops, and crawls to investigate conditions and access plumbing and gas equipment in crawl spaces and similar areas.
Drives automobiles and trucks to transport workers, supplies, and materials to job sites.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training and Experience: Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent. Two years of experience as a licensed journey plumber/gas fitter. (Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education)
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a Baltimore County journey plumber/gas fitter license
Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required. (Some positions require possession of a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent within 90 days of hire.)
Required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of plumbing and gas fitting. Knowledge of plumbing codes. Knowledge of plumbing and gas fitting tools, materials, and equipment.
Skill in plumbing and gas fitting. Skill in troubleshooting plumbing system malfunctions. Skill in reading blueprints and construction drawings.
Ability to lead a plumbing crew. Ability to read. Ability to follow instructions. Ability to operate commercial vehicles.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, balancing on scaffolding and lifts, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Frequently requires accessing limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, and under relocatables/trailers.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Some persons appointed to this class are required to obtain a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent within 90 days of hire. Employees who do not obtain the required license will be terminated.
Some persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.
Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency. They are subject to call to duty and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice. FLSA: Non-exempt
Grade:09 on AFSCME Pay Scale ($21.13 - $30.07/hour)
