Job Description
BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

TITLE: Mechanic III, HVACR

DEFINITION: Serves as a lead worker for the crew. Installs, repairs, and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment. Trains and gives guidance to less experienced mechanics. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Installs, repairs, maintains, and services a wide variety of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment including oil and gas fired hot water and low-pressure steam boiler burners, pumps, compressors, condensers, electronic and pneumatic temperature control systems, and related parts and assemblies.

Screws, bolts, and brazes parts to assemble HVACR components such as motors, pneumatic and electronic controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, and pipes.

Diagnoses malfunctions of HVACR equipment. Evaluates and tests equipment and component operations. Dismantles systems and components. Replaces and adjusts defective or worn parts.


Installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains piping systems that carry natural gas. Lays out projects. Repairs air handlers. Adjusts airflows and temperatures.

Maintains records of work performed. Prepares lists of parts and supplies to be requisitioned for assigned jobs. Leads and instructs less experienced employees.

Drives an automobile or light truck to transport workers and equipment to and from job sites. Lifts and carries HVACR equipment, parts, tools, and supplies. Climbs ladders, crawls, bends, and stoops to access HVACR systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent. Five years of experience in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Note: Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a Baltimore County journey HVAC license or an equivalent license that is eligible for reciprocity and can be obtained within 30 days of employment offer required.

Possession of a Type I and II technician's certification (CFC certification) approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency is required.

Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration repair. Knowledge of E.P.A. regulations governing refrigerant handling and disposal.

Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment. Skill in testing and diagnosing malfunctioning equipment and systems. Skill in determining necessary procedures for repair. Skill in selecting appropriate tools, equipment, and parts needed to complete work. Skill in leading and instructing others. Skill in keeping records of work performed.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work of this class entails heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Frequently requires accessing limited access spaces including but not limited to crawl spaces, roofs, and under relocatables/trailers. Requires the use of coordinative and manipulative skills in the operation tools and equipment. Duties require exposure to adverse weather conditions and travel sites throughout Baltimore County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency. They are subject to call to duty and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.

Employees who do not maintain the required license and certification to work in this classification may be terminated.


FLSA: Non-exempt

SALARY: Grade 09 on the AFSCME payscale $21.13 - $30.07

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00.
  • An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
