National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) has an opening for a Principal Applications Systems Engineer in Washington, DC.

Job Duties: Develop, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. Provide technical leadership for the design, development and support of complex mission-critical business applications, including mainframe, client server and web-based applications (TPF, MVS/DB2, Java, MS.NET, Oracle/SQL, etc.). Establish detailed application designs (including design patterns/frameworks), consistent with Amtrak's Enterprise Architecture, ensure alignment of developed software with design. Work closely with marketing to define technical requirements, statements of work, select vendors and system solutions. Leverage best practice application development and related methodologies and support the establishment of a Software Engineering Culture within the organization. Work with technical staff to understand and resolve Tier 3 level technical issues related to applications. Lead the design, development, and maintenance of reliable, high volume, complex applications in mainframe, client-server and web environments. Develop reliable, high-volume, complex systems and create optimization programs to resolve problems and development of prototypes for proof of concept activities. Assist in the development of technical documentation, lead demonstrations of developed software, and mentor development staff. Develop and implement Application Design patterns and common business components/services that are leveraged by multiple applications. Understand, interpret, and translate requirements (functional and non-functional) into application designs and documentation. Leverage standard software modeling techniques to describe system design; design components; utilize existing system components that are leverage by multiple applications; and leverage capabilities of environment. Manage and lead the Regression and automations and DevOps teams and services across the Enterprise. Build DevOps Delivery pipeline including infrastructure, environment provisioning, deployment and monitoring tools. Perform hands-on cloud application development and cloud implementations (AWS, Azure, etc.).

Requirements: Must have a Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related technical field and 2 year of work experience in job offered or 2 year(s) of work experience in a related occupation. Some travel may be required to work on projects at various, unanticipated sites throughout the United States. Position requires experience with the following: 1) C++; 2) TSO/MVS/TPF; 3) Angular; 4) ReactJs; 5) VS COBOL II/DB2; 6) JCL/VSAM/CICS; 7) C# / ASP.NET; 8) PL/SQL/Informatica; 9) Java/J2EE/EJB/JMS; 10) AWS Redshift/Lambda/CLI/Dynamo DB; 11) WebSphere IBM MQ; 12) Python.
