Covanta is seeking an Auxiliary Operator to join our Covanta Alexandria/Arlington Waste-to-Energy Facility! This position will report directly to the Operations Supervisor.

JOB SUMMARY

Safely perform several activities, including the operation and inspection of various power plant systems including boilers and associated equipment for a waste processing and generation facility operating 24-hours per day, 7-days per week to improve plant preservation. The Auxiliary Operator must utilize a variety of techniques and tools to perform operational assignments and tasks as requested. The auxiliary operators work entails the daily logs and operational assessment of the auxiliary equipment including pumps, fans, air compressors, electrical devices and conveyor systems. This may also include operations of refuse cranes to maintain correct levels of refuse-fuel into the furnace, mixing refuse in the pit, and maintaining fire watch over the pit and associated areas, while guaranteeing their own safety on the job by utilizing safety equipment and PPE. Preferred candidate will have operational experience in similar power plant industries, merchant marine experience, or trade school technical licenses. Potential for advancement through the operations department to control room operator of shift supervisor will be subject to candidate's performance.

Daily activities

  • Perform hourly logs of operational equipment in use and out of service.
  • Responsible for boiler water chemistry testing.
  • Supporting the Shift Supervisor and Control Room Operator by accurately reporting equipment. malfunctions or trends which may indicate possible equipment danger.
  • Supporting plant operations and maintenance during boiler outages.
  • Assist in the operation of a clean and safe work environment and observe good safety habits.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and HazMat Procedures with respect to the storage and handling of materials in the area.
  • Identifying and correcting abnormal operating conditions or emergency situations.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work in a self-guided manner in the absence of supervision and demonstrate creativity, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate initiative.
  • Report all personal injuries and EHS incidents and assist with both safety and environmental investigations.
  • Ensure a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in all assigned areas.
  • Requisition material and supplies from stockroom; recommend purchases and suppliers.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities to:

  • Operate power hand tools and other specialized equipment.
  • Be certified/or ability to be certified to operate different types of lifting equipment, JLGs, scissor lifts, work from man basket.
  • Ability to work at heights and trained in proper fall prevention & protection equipment.
  • Ability to work with a full-face respirator during extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Ability to work in confined space areas of the facility.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently ascends or descends ladders, stairs, elevated walkways, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Frequently lifts or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts or moves up to 50 pounds.
  • Position requires working near and around operating mechanical parts and mobile equipment and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations.
  • Capable of wearing personal protective equipment, such as hearing protectors and respirators, as necessary.

Qualifications, Education, Training and Skills:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years related experience with high pressure boilers and electric generating equipment or formal technical or utility training
  • Merchant Mariners credentials or related military experience is a plus
