The Position

The position

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced and accomplished scientific leader to oversee our genetic analysis and animal model creation groups. The candidate will develop and implement new technologies and she/he will co-lead and champion a large and successful animal model program to advance our Mission of discovering and developing life-changing therapies to help patients.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct oversight and management of a group of 20+ staff (16 full time employees and 7 contractors) in both Dixon and South San Francisco focused on animal model creation and high-throughput automated genetic analysis. The position is based in Dixon and will co-lead our Dixon site with the Dixon veterinarian and head of animal resources. The entire Dixon site is supported by >100 staff responsible for our animal model program
  • Build strong relationships with Genentech scientists within all therapeutic areas to better support their needs for engineered animal models
  • Be a visible and dynamic champion of the animal model program
  • Oversight and management of a group of 20+ staff (16 full time employees and 7 contractors) focused on animal model creation and high-throughput automated genetic analysis
  • Lead a technology-focused discovery lab to advance molecular editing techniques
  • Development and implementation of new technologies for genome analysis (including next-generation sequencing), automation and animal model creation
  • Advancing the field of genetic and genomic analysis, animal model creation and/or automation with publication of high-impact scientific papers
  • Developing and implementing key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of the animal model program
  • Support and facilitate employee career development
  • Give effective technical and strategic presentations to senior management and other groups within the company
  • Travel to South San Francisco as needed to better interact with stakeholders and collaborators

Qualifications: Education, experience, knowledge, and skills

  • Applicants should have an advanced degree (PhD, MD, or DVM) and post-doctoral training or equivalent as well as a record of high impact scientific accomplishments as an independent investigator
  • Significant experience in academia and/or industry leading and developing a large team in a matrix environment in molecular biology, genome engineering, animal model generation, or related scientific field
  • Candidates must have a strong track-record of independent scientific accomplishments with recent first- or corresponding-authored publications in high-impact journals
  • Expertise and accomplishments in disciplines such as molecular biology, genetics, genomics, animal models, and/or synthetic biology
  • A demonstrated track record working with CRISPR technology is highly desirable
  • The ideal candidate has practical knowledge of genetically engineered animal model generation, expertise in quantitative (including digital) PCR platforms, next-generation sequencing (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, etc.), as well as hands-on experience setting up and/or running an automated laboratory
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics is a significant plus
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment
  • Experience evaluating, implementing, and developing new technology, as well as continued process improvements
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills are an absolute requirement - capable of fostering teamwork, cooperation, trust and respect
  • Strong leadership skills and passionate about mentorship and career development for his/her group members, able to inspire and motivate teams to make a big impact and deliver their best every day
  • Demonstrated excellence in leading and managing projects
