This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program


Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking bright, highly motivated individuals for an exciting one-year Internship in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide new college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation

2019 and 2020 college graduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who have no professional work experience in an area related to the internship are welcome to apply. Applications will be considered from candidates who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2019 or 2020 prior to the start date of the Internship or who are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.

Positions Available
Utility Maintenance & Distribution Engineers

(Civil and Computer Science Engineers)

The Water Section in the Water Sewer Streets Bureau (WSS) is responsible for providing an adequate supply of quality water for domestic services and fire protection by investigating and repairing leaks, installing new service connections, maintaining system pressure and flow, testing water mains and fire hydrants, and monitoring water distribution utilizing the Supervising Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. WSS recently implemented a new utility billing software, Cayenta. This Intern will provide support for development of standard operating procedures for Cayenta and support development of field procedures documentation, perform design support for specific maintenance jobs, document field data for meter service improvements, and perform support services for installations.

Under the guidance of a senior team member, this Intern will assist with the following:

Civil Engineer:
  • Coordinate program support (maps for annual drinking water Chlorine Burn, Paving Program, Distribution, Commercial Meter Inspection Program);
  • Design and review support for water, sewer, street projects and maintenance jobs
  • Craft SOP's for review;
  • Development of the Meter Change-Out Program;
  • Creating of a High Use Investigation Program in respond to high use utility bills; and
  • Meter Laboratory Testing Development, specifically for commercial water meters.
Computer Science Engineer:
  • Support/coordinate Service Order management in the Meter Service Group;
  • Developing processes for Cayenta utility billing software;
  • Performing data analysis on utility system information;
  • Creating reports which document the status of service orders;
  • Participate in the development and implementation of SCADA; and/or
  • Data management development and assistance for programs such as Valve Exercise Program and the Pavement Restoration Program.



Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree in 2019 or 2020 prior to the start date of the Internship or are currently enrolled in a Master's degree program related to the internship.
  • Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.
Degree Requirements: Civil Engineering, IT, Computer Science, or Software Engineering.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • GIS ArcMap;
  • Power BI;
  • AutoCAD;
  • PowerApps;
  • MS Excel;
  • SCADA;
  • Cayenta; and/or
  • SharePoint.
Substitution: There is no substitution for the degree requirement.
