Job Description

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) has an immediate opening for a RELAY TECHNICIAN in Hughesville, Maryland.  SMECO is a rapidly growing electric utility that serves 160,000 consumers just south of Washington, D.C.  SMECO is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace.  This position pays $43.88/hr.  In addition, a 3% non-elective 401k contribution is provided to the employee and they are eligible to receive a matching contribution of $.50 on the dollar not to exceed 1%.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and related equipment, such as regulators, reclosers, breakers, etc.; repairs electronic controls and electronic circuit boards to the component level.
  • Performs the testing f protective relaying equipment of the 230kV, 69kV and 12.47kV electrical systems; including overcurrent, directional overcurrent, differential and impedance relays and maintains test results.  Modifies and makes necessary adjustments as requested.
  • Performs switching functions along with another qualified Journeyman or above on transmission and distribution apparatus as directed.
  • Performs installation, maintenance and testing of various special protection and relaying systems including low-side auto transfer schemes, transfer trip equipment, transmission system transfer schemes, breaker travel analysis, transformer turns ratio (TTR) testing etc.
  • Provides technical support regarding equipment and device operations including microprocessor controls, battery chargers, line device recorders, etc.; repairs and calibrates underground locators, thumpers, gas detectors, etc.
  • Performs the installation and maintenance of the Cooperative's microwave radio system, mobile radios and base station two-way radio equipment; performs frequency and modulation checks on the radio equipment and assures all systems are operating in accordance with FCC regulations; keeps records and maintenance schedule on related equipment.
  • Performs the installation and maintenance of the Cooperative's communication systems, such as microwave, telemetry, fiber optic and audio tone channel equipment, etc.
  • Performs the installation and maintenance of the Cooperative's substation radios and related base stations to ensure high reliability with minimum down time.
  • Responsible for assigned vehicle and/or test equipment to be kept clean and in good working condition; also responsible for inspections and mileage reports.

In addition, duties of equal or lesser skill may be assigned by the Relaying & Communications Director or assigned supervisor, to meet emergencies or other operating needs.

Required Skills

This job requires reading, writing and mathematics; therefore, a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred, but no required.  Two years formal training in electronics or the equivalent is required.

Required Experience

An ideal candidate would have two years experience working with electrical systems.  Must be knowledgeable of the communications, SCADA, and protective relaying systems and test procedures.
