The 1.3 million member United Food Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), a powerful voice for working men and women, is seeking a Press Secretary to develop, plan and implement comprehensive and diversified strategic media and messaging programs to support UFCW organizing objectives and enhance UFCW identity through local, regional and national news exposure. This position is also available to assist in other communications areas of the department as assigned.
 
The Press Secretary is a professional position that supports field activities, often on location with very little notice, and requires the exercise of discretion in the development and implementation of strategic media campaigns.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develops and implement a strategic messaging and media and community outreach program through the Communications Department on behalf of the Organizing Department.
  • Speaks, reads, and writes fluently in Spanish and English.
  • Converts concepts in the source language to equivalent concepts in the target language. Relay the style and tone of the original language while ensuring culturally relevancy.
  • Serves in a lead capacity pitching stories to national and regional papers, magazines and long-form media outlets, TV and radio stations, to online outlets with a focus on issues effecting Latino communities, which will involve pitching to Spanish-language outlets, Latino-oriented English language outlets, as well as mainstream media outlets. 
  • Takes incoming inquiries from reporters and work with national press secretary to coordinate response.
  • Analyzes print, broadcast and online media coverage for trends that would influence our strategies and use that analysis in our communications vehicles.
  • Prepares press releases, op-eds, newsletters, briefings, earned media plans, website and social media content.
  • Distributes statements and materials to media, actively pitching, booking, and placing op-eds.
  • Helps maintain UFCW’s press lists and reporter relationships. This position will also include outreach to diverse communities and audiences.
  • Provides communications support for Campaigns and Civil Rights Departments’ programs as assigned by the Director.
  • Develops and implement a strategic messaging, press, and community outreach plans on behalf of the Communications Department in support of the Organizing Department’s campaigns.
  • Work involves frequent and last minute travel, temporary relocation and irregular and/or unpredictable hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Spanish, English, Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or Marketing preferred and minimum of 4-7 years of experience in bilingual communications with translation and linguistic work, or Master’s degree in Spanish fluent and/or native Spanish speaker. Significant experience pitching media and has relationships with producers and reporters. Outstanding written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to write, prepare and edit in a creative and clear manner under limited supervision, at a level acquired with five years of professional working experience.
  • Capable of managing sensitive and high-risk online environments/communities. Experience with social media and integrated digital communications. Good oral communication skills which include public speaking.   
  • Basic photography, and familiarity with Photoshop and other graphic editing tools; on-the-record experience; Hill experience or have worked on a political campaign experience or as a spokesperson for a national organization preferred, but not required.
