Job Description
Paralegal/Reader Providing paralegal/reader assistance to sight-impaired counsel:
  • Must be organized, timely and have good communication skills. Reads complex legal documents and other documents aloud in clear, quick, and easily understood voice. Provides accurate oral or written summaries of messages, meetings, and complex legal and other documents.
  • Converts documents to electronic or hard copy print formats that are accessible to the counsel.
  • Schedules appointments on calendar
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to sensitive and confidential information gained because of position (e.g., employee performance, labor/management relations, sensitive and confidential program information, legal advice offered by attorneys to clients).
  • Proofs complex legal and other documents to identify typos, grammatical problems, formatting inconsistencies, and legal citation errors.
  • Conducts searches on databases, including LexisNexis or other web-based legal research sites and conducts legal analysis to identify cases that relate to specific issues.
  • Conducts factual research on internet or through the review of documents.
  • Reviews documents to identify those which can be withheld for attorney-client, deliberative process, or other applicable privileges.
  • Performs legal cite checking of legal memoranda and legal briefs.
  • Assists counsel in use of various computer systems, such as the performance management system, FedTraveler, and webTA.
  • Identifies and summarizes articles and other publications of possible interest to the counsel.

Expertise and Related Issues:

  • Must have the ability to read complex legal documents clearly, quickly, and in a manner that is easy for the AGC to understand, with correct pronunciation of complex legal terminology.
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree plus one year paralegal experience or training.
  • Must work well in stressful, time-sensitive situations.
  • Must have proficiency in information technology and common office software, including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have proficiency in using LexisNexis and other legal research products.
  • Must have proficiency in cite checking legal memoranda and briefs and using appropriate legal citation formats (i.e., Blue Book format).
  • Must have excellent writing and proof reading skills, including proficiency in the use of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Must have superior oral communication and interpersonal skills that would permit the individual to communicate professionally, courteously, and with appropriate diplomacy with all types of individuals from the highest level of government officials to individual members of the public.
  • Must have strong organizational skills so as to ensure that the counsel remains organized.
  • Must have the ability to quickly comprehend complex legal materials in order to provide accurate, detailed oral and written summaries of complex legal and factual documents.
