Summary:
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for evaluating/screening patients, establishing treatment goals, implementing treatment plans, completing patient and family teaching/discharge planning, and documenting results and progress in the medical record. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist demonstrates competence defined (*) in Therapeutic Recreation Specialist responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care and services to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and selected adults.

Responsibilities:
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist supports, communicates, implements and enforces the philosophy, mission, values, standards, policies and procedures of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

* 1. Evaluates and screens patients to determine therapeutic recreational needs, identifies strengths and deficits, establishes long and short-term goals and develops an individualized treatment plan incorporating patient and family needs.

* 2. Administers treatment intervention to meet each patient’s specific needs and achieve their goals; observes progress and/or changes in patient’s condition and modifies treatment plan accordingly.

* 3. Facilitates the patient’s adjustment into the hospital. Facilitates improvements in the patient’s self-perception of body image and function.

* 4. Documents patients’ evaluation results, objective status, progress towards goals, treatment plan, and recommendations in compliance with documentation requirements of the hospital and accrediting associations; utilizes appropriate computerized or standardized documentation methods, as applicable to caseload.

* 5. Educates patient and family on each child’s treatment goals and therapy plan; instructs patients and parents on therapeutic activities to follow while in hospital or at home; documents instruction; and evaluates ongoing compliance and understanding.

6. Communicates patient’s status and collaborates with physicians, third-party payors, and relevant healthcare providers.

7. Maintains the administrative functions of individual caseload, including scheduling patients for treatment, entering daily patient charges, and submitting timely documentation to appropriate parties.

* 8. Assists in establishing community re-entry programs involving recreational components.

* 9. Recommends and secures patient referrals to community agencies to ensure patient continues to receive needed and appropriate services after discharge.

10. Attends continuing education programs and participates in departmental in-service training programs to enhance professional development.

11. Conducts formal and informal Therapeutic Recreation educational programs for hospital staff, students and community. Delegates to students from accredited programs and unlicensed personnel, supervising care provided.

12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other information:
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited school.
2. One year experience as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) in physical dysfunction preferred or clinical affiliation in the area of pediatrics.
3. Certification as a Therapeutic Specialist through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation certification.
4. CPR certification must be received no later than 60 days post hire or 60 days post expiration.
