Federal Publications is seeking a Conference Director to join the business. This position reports to the Manager, Conferences and will be located in Washington, DC. The Conference Director has overall responsibility for the planning, execution, and financial success of continuing education programs and conferences for lawyers, corporate compliance officers and other government contracting professionals.
This position is responsible for the topic selection, faculty acquisition and agenda development plus the onsite execution of half day and full day programs and longer conferences.
This position also teams with the business' marketing and sales groups to drive the successful marketing and sales of the programs and conferences the conference director produces. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing senior level relationships with speakers, and conference chairs, all of whom are typically high profile senior partners, in-house counsel, government contracting professionals, educators and government regulators.
This role is accountable for both the revenue and the expenses of the programs and conferences well as the best in class satisfaction of program and conference speakers and chairs. The goal is simply to be the program and conference provider of choice for speakers and conference chairs.
Primary responsibilities include:
  • The annual development of government contracting and substantive law topics to be produced by the business. A percentage of each years events should be new topics within the teams designated law practice areas or new programs in new or emerging topical areas.
  • Accountability for the P&L of programs and conferences.
  • Ability to work across organizational boundaries to leverage West resources.
  • Accountability for best in class satisfaction of speaker and chairs of our programs and conferences.
  • Ability to provide superior customer service with a sense of urgency to program and conference speakers and chairs.
  • Develop substantive topical content for events, including agendas and oversee the collection of substantive print material.
  • Engage acknowledged experts on a substantive law and government contracting to plan agenda of events.
  • Provide strategic and tactical direction to team members and other junior members of the business.
  • Define and implement best practices at the business unit level.
  • Contribute as a member of the management team to overall development of the business including process development, documentation, and talent development

Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge and a minimum of 5 years experience in federal government contracting and procurement.
  • Superior oral and written communication abilities: demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of sensitive and confidential issues
  • Self-starter with ability to work with minimal supervision and manage workload effectively with competing demands for resources and time.
  • Ability to problem solve with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to travel regularly.
  • Desire and ability to identify, develop and track new developments in substantive legal areas.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and persuading industry leaders.
  • Experience working with senior level attorneys and executives.
  • Knowledge of large law firms and the legal industry.
  • Demonstrated competencies in being accountable for financial goals, high touch customer service, experience understanding the needs of lawyers in large law firms in the areas of business development and client service.
  • Proven competencies in managing large conferences and significant numbers of speakers.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to react quickly, assess, create and execute solutions.
